Soviet paratroopers do not need superfluous introductions. Blue beret, buttonholes and chevron with planes and parachute. The beauty! Here are just some of the demobilization photos from the times of the USSR, you can see very strange "paratroopers" with green headdresses and buttonholes. Well, or very strange border guards, whose buttonholes and chevrons for some reason resemble those worn by the guys from the Airborne Forces. What's the catch here?

There is no catch. If in a demobilization photo you see a person with green shoulder straps, green buttonholes and a chevron and the same green headdress. At the same time, he has symbols of the Airborne Forces on his buttonholes and chevron: a pair of planes and a descending parachute - you know, before you is a DShMG soldier. DShMG is an airborne assault maneuvering group, airmobile formations of the Border Troops. The first DShMG was created in the USSR during the War in Afghanistan in 1982.

DShMG were created as formations to protect the state border of the Soviet Union on both sides of the line. In other words, the border guards from the DShMG were supposed not only to patrol the border, but, if necessary, to be thrown into the territory of the neighboring state - Afghanistan. The need for such formations arose due to the rapid growth in the number of all kinds of gangs, which posed a serious threat to the infrastructure and population of the Soviet Union in the border zone.

The specificity of the local conditions of warfare made it possible to respond promptly to threats only with the help of airborne landing operations. Units of border guards were formed, which now also underwent airborne training. In total, 6 DShMG were formed during the years of the Afghan war. Most of the groups were disbanded after the withdrawal of troops.

Alas, after the departure of the "communist boot" order and stability in the region were not added. The theater of military operations has not changed either. As a result, DShMG still exist in two post-Soviet countries - the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan. There are two DShMGs in Kazakhstan - "Boran" and "Saryagash", which are subordinate to the Border Guard Service. In Russia, DShMG existed until 2005. Now these formations are called OMD PS FSB - Departments of mobile actions of the Border Guard Service of the FSB.
