Why the Manchus and Tungus carried the sword with the hilt back

The position of the sword, like the saber, when worn can be different. Basically, weapons are worn in a diagonal or horizontal suspension on a belt on the hip on the left side. Only the Romans wore on the right side. The Chinese sometimes practiced another way of wearing - behind the back. There was another option - on the belt, when the hilt is turned back. This manner was found among the eastern peoples - the Manchus, Tungus, Mongols, and occasionally among the Altai and Chinese.

The ephesus of the weapon, which protrudes forward and upward, with the usual method of wearing (it does not matter downward or upward with the blade), is an obstacle to the quick extraction of the bow. Namely, this weapon was the priority for the warriors, while the sword was additional. That is, they were mainly used when there were no arrows anymore, or they had to fight in close combat.

In this case, the sword was obtained in the following way: the tip of the scabbard was knocked back sharply with the left hand, and then down, after which the blade turned over and pulled out on the suspension. If initially it was suspended so that the blade looked down, when removed it was already in a combat position - the blade looked up.

Another option for extracting weapons looked a little different. The scabbard with the same left hand was quickly pushed behind the back, and the sword was drawn from the right side. How widespread this style of carrying edged weapons was is not known for certain. But its roots go back at least to the Middle Ages.

Whichever of these methods the warrior uses, it is much more convenient just such an arrangement of the hilt - deployed back. This will save precious seconds that could cost life in battle.
It will be no less interesting to know why the Russian army adopted checkers and abandoned the use of sabers. A source: https://novate.ru/blogs/260321/58331/
