Raspberries ripen in early July and end bearing in early August. After harvesting, a small part of the fruit is present on the bushes. The raspberry must be prepared for winter. The branches should be cut as close to the ground as possible. They are then burnt or buried to reduce the risk of spreading infections. Mostly young shoots are pruned.
Gardeners recommend ribbon-planting raspberries to improve productivity and make it easy to care for. At the base, the tape should be 40 cm wide. The distance between the stems left after pruning should be between 10 and 15 cm. For 1 meter - up to 20 stems.
The life span of the mother bush is up to 12 years. Young shoots should be left to bear fruit, and old bushes should be removed. Old bushes are removed with a sharp shovel and burned. The rest need to be well watered and fed.
The pruning procedure is recommended immediately after the formation of the last fruits. The timing depends on the region. Please note that the remontant variety can also bear fruit in the fall. Pruning of such a plant is performed after leaf fall. In general, pruning should be done one month before the first frost.
Correct pruning issues
First, weak, dry, fungal-damaged shoots are removed. The same should be done with two-year-old branches with dark brown bark. The height of the stumps is 5 cm. If you make them lower, then pests can settle there.
Use pruning shears as sharp as possible. It must first be disinfected in alcohol or strong manganese solution. You can wear gloves or use a long lopper.
If the bushes are affected by gall midge, then they need to be cut below the nest with larvae (there is usually a thickening in this place). The stump should remain 50 cm in size. For purple spots, pruning is done at soil level. If the entire plant is affected, it must be uprooted.
Each raspberry bush should have 5-7 strong and strong annual shoots, or up to 10 pieces per 1 meter of tape planting.
How to care for raspberries after pruning
Raspberries need to be watered up to 50 cm deep. In summer, the bushes should be watered several times. Watering is stopped in September. The plant completes its growth and prepares for winter.
Raspberries require phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen. It is important not to allow either an overabundance or a shortage of fertilizing.
Phosphate-potassium fertilizers are recommended to be applied in early September. Take up to 60 g of potassium sulfate, 30 g of phosphate rock per 1 square meter of raspberries.
After applying top dressing, the plant must be mulched with peat or compost. Organic matter is applied annually, several kilograms per 1 square meter. You can use rotted compost or manure. The fertilizer is scattered along the aisles with a layer of up to 15 cm.
You can also feed raspberries with boron and magnesium. Take 25 g of magnesium sulfate per 1 square meter. In the springtime, you need to make 1.5-2 g of borax per 1 square meter.
