Grapes are a culture that is grown not only in the southern latitudes, but also in the middle and even northern ones. Subject to all the rules of agricultural technology, a healthy plant and a high yield are obtained. Also, success depends on correct breeding.
Reproduction of grapes in autumn
The most appropriate time for this procedure is pruning time. Depending on the region, it is started from October to November, after the leaves have completely fallen off and the first frosts have come. Experienced gardeners say that cuttings harvested at this time take root better, have resistance to weather fluctuations, high immunity to various diseases and insect pests.
Advantages and disadvantages of the autumn period
Breeding grapes in the fall has a number of advantages:
- The cuttings are in good health, as the vine has matured over the summer.
- Seedlings are quickly adopted and have strong immunity, as they are cut from bushes with sufficient nutrients.
- During the winter, the mother bush may freeze out, there will be no shoots suitable for harvesting.
- Autumn planting material is easy to transport.
However, there are drawbacks - you cannot be mistaken with the date of harvesting, otherwise the cuttings will not have time to start.
Rules for propagating grapes by cuttings
The event is divided into several stages:
- preparation of planting material;
- storage;
- rooting.
Harvesting cuttings
Breeding success depends on the planting material:
- Shoots are chosen strong, strong, without signs of decay, disease or insect pests.
- The diameter of the shank should be between 6 and 10 mm.
- The mother vine must be firm and flexible.
- The bark is brown.
- The length of the workpiece is about 45 cm. The handle must have at least 3 buds. During storage, the tips may rot or dry out. Such parts are cut with a sharp instrument. Therefore, the length of the workpiece can be shortened.
They carefully examine the planting material collected on a foreign site. If signs of disease are found, such cuttings are discarded.
Storage rules
Observing the storage conditions of grapes, healthy seedlings are obtained, which are quickly accepted in spring and grow.
Before removing them for the winter, remove:
- leftover foliage;
- mustache;
- stepsons.
The cuttings are folded evenly and tied with twine. Sticking labels to know the name of the variety.
Then they are put away for storage using one of the following methods:
- In trenches dug on the site. For this, depressions of 50 cm are dug in the ground and along the length of the cuttings. The bottom is covered with a layer of moistened sand, cuttings are placed. Sprinkle 40 cm of soil on top, sprinkle with sawdust, peat or straw. With the onset of frost, such a place is covered with a film.
- In the refrigerator door. For such storage, the cuttings are soaked in water for 2 days so that they are stocked with a sufficient amount of moisture. The lower end is then wrapped with a damp towel and plastic bag. Make sure that the fabric does not dry out.
- In an underground or basement. This is the most preferred method. A layer of wet sand or sawdust is poured into the box. Cuttings are placed vertically in them. Make sure the filler remains moist.
Rooting of planting material
Cuttings are pre-prepared for planting:
- The cut is refreshed with a sharp, disinfected instrument.
- For two days they are placed in soft, settled water so that the seedlings are saturated with moisture. Some experienced gardeners add a growth stimulant to the liquid.
- Make a lower oblique cut.
After this treatment, the cuttings are placed in prepared containers with soil. Saplings are placed in a warm, bright place. After 7-10 days, roots appear.
Observing all the rules for the procurement of planting material, its storage and planting, healthy grapes are obtained. It is quickly accepted in a new location and is actively growing.
