They drive nails into the bark at a sharp angle, and then bite off the caps. As a result, the nail is almost impossible to reach. They perform a similar manipulation from different sides of the tree, at different heights.
In addition, there is a psychological aspect to this whole story. It is enough to drive nails into a couple or three trees so that their heads are visible. Lumberjacks are intimidated by this.
Unfortunately, the cunning poachers figured out how to protect themselves: they arm themselves with metal detectors. The villagers try not to injure the trees in vain, and therefore alternately drive small and large nails into them. When a metal detector finds metal in wood, the woodcutters do not touch it.
After about a year, the nail is completely hidden under the bark. As a result, the tree remains alive, poachers bypass it.
It should be noted that even the sight of trees with nails scares away. If the nail falls under the chainsaw, the chain may break. As a result, the lumberjack will be seriously injured. Local residents warn poachers that trees are "spiked" in the forest by hanging appropriate signs and posters.
