Winter garlic is easy to grow as it is hardy and yields good. But many gardeners are unaware of the merits of some of the planting methods for this vegetable. I start planting about a month before the onset of permanent frosts. During this time, the garlic should have time to take root.

Garlic planting preparation

I advise you to plant the vegetable in a lighted place with light soil. The best precursors for the culture are pumpkins, grain plants.

Garlic should be planted in the same place only after 4-5 years.

Before starting to dig, I bring rotted compost to the garden bed (fertilizer bucket / 1 sq. m) and add ash powder in the amount of one glass. I dig the site seven days before planting.

Planting garlic cloves

This planting method is popular with gardeners and I use it. First, I select large heads, divide them into teeth, without damaging the shell. I perform this action just before landing.

The day before planting, I soak the material in a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate. I spill the rows with Fitosporin-M solution.

I place the teeth at a distance of about 10-15 cm. Planting depth should be at least 8 cm.

To better manage the plants, I alternate single-line and double-line rows.

Planting garlic in pits

You can use another planting method: two garlic cloves in one hole. I advise you to make the holes at intervals of 18-20 cm, and the distance between the rows should be at least 30 cm. Place the planting material in the soil at different depths: place a large clove at the bottom, deepening by 8-10 cm. Arrange another clove (smaller) a little higher, at the opposite wall of the fossa.

Usually, before planting, the planting hole must be shed with a solution prepared from Fitosporin-M or Sporobacterin in order to protect the garlic from fungal diseases.

Planting whole bulbs

Garlic can also be planted with whole heads. I like it because this method saves space in the garden. For planting, I use bulbs with 4-5 prongs.

I plant them in holes up to 15 cm deep, I cover them with nutritious soil. I make a distance of no more than 25 cm between the holes. I water the planting if necessary.

Sowing with seed

Some varieties of garlic can degenerate. To maintain yields, garlic should be renewed every three to four years by planting a vegetable in the form of seeds. These small airy bulbs form on the garlic arrows.

"Bulbules" are sown in autumn or spring. Seed material does not need to be disinfected. Seeds are sown to a depth of no more than 3 cm. The interval between rows is 20-30 cm. In July, a set grows from the seeds, which must be harvested a little earlier than winter garlic.

Planting a vegetable using whole inflorescences

Some gardeners use whole dried inflorescences to make planting easier, without having to disassemble them into separate seeds.

To do this, place a box with bulbs in the landing recess to a depth of 5-6 cm. Then watering is carried out and sprinkled with soil. The capsule under a layer of earth crumbles into seeds, and in July, teeth grow out of them, which should be dug up and dried.

Planting with one-toothed bulbs

First, one-toothed teeth are chosen with a size of at least one centimeter. Planting material is placed in grooves to a depth of 6 cm, the interval between the bulbs should be 7-10 cm. Plant your teeth in the fall. Large and healthy heads of garlic grow from this material.

Cover the area with mulch after planting. You can use hay or straw for this. The shelter will retain moisture in the soil, protect the soil from freezing, and with the arrival of spring it will help to facilitate the care of plants, since watering and weeding is practically not needed.
