Today I want to talk about the list of necessary autumn work in the garden, most of which I do in October. Many believe that with the arrival of autumn, gardening work stops and the time for the long-awaited rest comes, but this is not at all the case. The health and productivity of your garden in the next season depend on the correctness of the agrotechnical measures.
What am I doing in the garden in October
I am sharing with you a list of things that I consider important to complete before the cold weather arrives.
Harvesting
Some crops, especially when grown in mild climates, continue to bear fruit after the end of summer. Personally, with the arrival of autumn, I continue to harvest some varieties of tomatoes, cabbage, as well as various greens, which I sowed back in August. In addition, around the middle of October, the red-haired beauty of the pumpkin ripens.
I deliberately leave some late-ripening roots until freezing temperatures, and sometimes for the winter. For example, horseradish can be left in the soil until the first frost. Collected during this period, it manages to accumulate more nutrients and acquires a softer taste.
Those who grow Brussels sprouts in their beds should know that the vegetable is not afraid of low temperatures and only becomes tastier. Therefore, with the harvest of such cabbage, you can wait until frost.
Cleaning the garden
After the last crop is harvested, do not forget to remove all plant and fruit residues from the surface of the soil. This is very important, since pests and pathogens often settle in the layer formed by plant debris. Therefore, I carefully select the collected material in order to separate the plants that can be sent to the compost box. If I meet signs of disease or pests, I will certainly burn such material outside the site.
Prevention of diseases and pests
I start this treatment immediately after the end of the leaf fall. As an effective drug against diseases of a fungal nature, I use a solution of Bordeaux liquid at a concentration of 3%. I process trees and shrubs with a ready-made composition.
As a preventive measure against scab, I spray crops and soil with the composition. prepared on the basis of urea.
If during the summer period your plants suffered from attacks of harmful insects, I advise you to treat the garden with special preparations of the insecticidal group. It will also be nice to whitewash the trunks of fruit trees. I do this every year. Firstly, this measure protects trees from insects that like to hide in the bark, and secondly, it protects delicate trees from the negative effects of low temperatures. As a working solution, I use a composition based on ordinary lime. If you do not want to cook on your own, you can purchase special paints in garden centers.
As part of pest control, do not forget about the beds. I disinfect them with ready-made preparations of the biological group like "Baktofit" or "Fitosporin".
Digging the soil
By the end of October, I dig up the soil in the beds and in the near-trunk circles of fruit trees. Such a measure helps to destroy the seeds of weeds and prevent pests from settling down for the winter in the upper layers of the soil. I dig it with a garden shovel. If the soils are fairly light, ordinary loosening will be sufficient. Usually, I combine another useful action with digging - I add nutrients contained in wood ash or compost to the soil.
Autumn water-charging irrigation
A very important event in preparing the garden for winter. The procedure is necessary to compensate for the moisture deficit, most of which was consumed by crops during the fruiting period. If you do not water the trees before the cold weather arrives, their root system will not be able to successfully overwinter. Moisture irrigation can be done in different ways. Personally, I prefer the traditional bucket option. Thus, it is not difficult to calculate how much liquid I add for each specific plant.
