To help the rose in strengthening the roots, improving metabolism, it is necessary to properly prune in the autumn. In addition, the plant increases its resistance to winter frosts and immunity to diseases and pests. Roses grow on my site, and now I will share with you my experience in pruning bushes.

Correct pruning of roses

The procedure is carried out in late summer - early autumn. First, I remove faded roses and weakened shoots. I make the sections even, stepping back at least 5 mm from the kidney. I cut off thin branches and shoots that prevent the plant from gaining strength for flowering.

I process large cuts with garden pitch. Also for this purpose, you can use ready-made disinfectants: RanNet paste or BlagoSad putty. Small cuts are tightened by themselves. All cut branches and leaves must be removed from the site.

And now I'll tell you about the rules for autumn pruning of the more famous groups of roses.

Hybrid tea rose

The rose blooms on this year's shoots and needs careful pruning. Strong branches are cut in half, thin by 1/3 of the length of the shoot. In addition, you should cut or shorten the weak branches growing inside the shrub.

Floribunda rose

Pruning is carried out after the culture has faded. Remove faded buds. Thick branches are shortened in half, and thin branches - by 1/3, leaving at least ten buds. Outdated shoots inside the bush are cut out completely.

Shrubs (spray roses)

After pruning, up to 3-5 healthy branches with 6-8 developed buds on each should remain on the entire shrub. The branches must be shortened by 1/3, and get rid of dry shoots completely. Strong branches should be left, and watery stems should be pruned so that they are not damaged by frost.

Ground cover roses

These crops need autumn pruning. All old, diseased and weak stems are removed, and healthy ones are slightly shortened. Lateral branches after flowering are cut into two or three buds. Also get rid of the side stems.

Climbing roses

In the first year of life, the rose does not need pruning. Flowering occurs from the second year. In late summer or early autumn, weak branches are cut off, and the flowering ones are shortened by three buds. The old ones are cut strongly, leaving 30 cm above the level of the root collar.

Climbing roses are divided into two types: kleimers and ramblers. For them, pruning is carried out with some differences.

Rambler

The culture blooms on last year's branches with small flowers. At the end of flowering, shoots with inflorescences are cut off. Pruning is done carefully. Rambler can be of two types:

  • blooming once: after the procedure, no more than 6-10 healthy branches remain on the plant, 3-5 annual and biennial stems, the main pruning is carried out in August;
  • blooming twice: up to 1-3 annuals should remain, as well as up to 3-6 biennial branches, the main pruning is done in the spring.

Kleimers

Plants tolerate pruning well. Young crops are tied up, and only after a few years they are pruned. Remove the top, cut the stems by a third. The oldest is removed from the old shoots.

Polyanthus roses

Most often they are pruned in the spring. However, damaged and diseased branches must be removed in the fall. Also, thickening branches are removed from the middle of the bush. At the end of the procedure, there should be at least 7-8 healthy shoots on the bush.

Pruning shrubs before winter

In October or November, pre-winter pruning is carried out.

Short pruning is carried out for hybrid tea roses and floribunda.

For standard roses, minor sanitary pruning is required, getting rid of dead shoots and foliage, young branches are cut slightly.

Formative pruning is needed for park roses. It is necessary to shorten strong shoots by 5-10 cm, while simultaneously removing foci of various infections, for example, powdery mildew.

After the actions taken, the shrubs can be covered for the winter.
