I began to grow alissum (lobularia) because of its unpretentiousness, beautiful flowering and pleasant aroma that filled my site.
About the plant
There are few types of alissum, only five. Of these, the common inhabitant of the gardens is the sea lobularia. The height of the bushes is up to 30 centimeters, they are splendid, small flowers are densely located, and the aroma has honey notes. Small leaves cover light hairs.
I recommend not to abuse high humidity or drought, although the plant is resistant to such processes. Lobularia also loves good lighting and tolerates cold well.
How to grow
I usually put the seeds directly into the soil on the plot, but you can grow using seedlings.
Sowing seedlings
This growing method will help bring flowering closer. Sowing seeds is at the end of March. Process and rules:
- Choose light and loose soil. Garden soil with the addition of sand is also suitable.
- Seeds cannot be placed densely.
- Don't bury the seeds, they need enough light. To do this, lightly press your palm on the seeds, pressing their soil.
- Water liberally.
- Use film or glass for cover.
- Place the landing in a warm, well-lit area.
- When shoots appear, remove the film and care by watering and controlling the lighting.
- After the appearance of the first leaf, you need to apply complex fertilizer.
- When the third true leaf grows, you need to cut the plants into separate containers.
When the night frosts are over, alissum can be planted in the ground. The distance between plants should be 15-20 centimeters. Water well after disembarkation. And after 40-50 days, the plants will delight with the first flowering.
Sowing directly into the ground
In late May - early June, I sow alissum on the site. The process is not complicated:
- I choose a sowing place that is slightly darkened or well lit. Then I fertilize it with complex agents 20 days before planting.
- I immerse the seeds in the soil by 1.5 centimeters.
- After the emergence of seedlings, I thin them out, leaving a distance of 10-15 centimeters between them, so as not to impair development and protect the plant from powdery mildew.
Lobularia care
Although alyssum is drought tolerant, it does not tolerate a prolonged lack of moisture when it blooms. But I advise you to water carefully and not overdo it, because decay can begin. To find out if watering is needed or not, I make a small hole 3-4 centimeters, if the soil is dry, I water it.
With the onset of summer, I regularly prune faded shoots and new ones soon appear in their place. In the same period, together with watering, I feed a maximum of two times. And if diseases appear from an excess of moisture, then I treat them with fungicides, and for pests I use insecticides.
Plot decoration
Alyssum has a wide range of colors and has a persistent, pleasant aroma. Therefore, I recommend planting it under the windows. Lobularia also goes well with roses and dahlias, phloxes and lilies. If you have a balcony, you can grow the plant in a hanging basket.
It is easy to grow this unpretentious beauty, and the result exceeds all expectations. It is enough just to choose a variety and, following all the points, correctly sow alyssum.
