Even winter-hardy plants that hibernate in a flower bed in containers on the balcony can die under improper conditions. This is due to the fact that there is not as much soil in the containers as in the garden, and in severe frosts, the roots of flowers can freeze out. Therefore, I always recommend that you additionally cover the walls of pots and containers with Styrofoam or any other suitable insulation. So, what plants do I recommend to grow in the winter on a balcony or loggia.

Euonymus

It belongs to evergreen woody plants, from 1 to 10 m in height. Low varieties are grown on the balconies. The plant looks especially attractive in autumn, when its green leaves change their color to purple, bronze and red. In summer, the plant needs an air temperature of about 32 degrees above zero, in winter 2-3 degrees below zero.

Heather

This plant belongs to perennial evergreen shrubs. Its height reaches 50 cm. It is completely unpretentious in care, it is winter hardiness. Heather copes with air temperatures of -20 degrees below zero. But when growing it on the balcony, I recommend insulating the container, as well as covering the plant with a small layer of mulch.

Haulteria recumbent

This is an unfamiliar plant. Especially for novice gardeners. But it is ideal for growing on a loggia or balcony, as it can withstand -30 degrees of frost. Outwardly, the haulteria is an evergreen shrub, only 15 cm high. Its green, pleasantly smelling leaves turn red in the cold. It blooms with pink or white flowers. This plant is a distant relative of heather.

Geykher

They attract gardeners with their variety of colors. Heucheras are both bright green and green, red, purple, yellow, violet. These plants are not too picky to care for. They are able to withstand both drought and frost. The only thing they need is a fertile, breathable and slightly alkaline soil.

Boxwood

These luxurious shrubs will decorate any winter garden on the balcony. For these purposes, low-growing varieties are selected, the height of which does not exceed 1 m. Boxwood copes well with frosts. Even if its shoots are slightly frozen, they can be cut in the spring, and the bush will quickly restore its attractiveness.

Sedum

This is a plant known to all gardeners, but not all of its species and varieties are suitable for growing in containers. Only frost-resistant varieties are preferred. They are both tall and ground cover. The sedum plant is not demanding in care, it can grow in the shade and in the sun. Unlike other plants, they do not like fertile soil and do not require frequent watering.

Conifers

They are attractive at any time of the year, but in winter they look special. It is customary to grow low conifers in containers:

  • ordinary spruce;
  • Canadian spruce;
  • weymouth pine;
  • scaly juniper.

To prevent the roots of plants in the container from freezing in severe frost, it is recommended to mulch them.

Erika

It is a short but beautiful plant belonging to the heather family. It is distinguished by unpretentious care and a long flowering period.

Yucca

It can be grown indoors where the air temperature does not drop below 0 degrees. This evergreen shrub attracts attention not only during the flowering period, but also with its gray-green leaves. Yucca is not too demanding to care for, but loves good lighting, moist air and loose soil.

Japanese pieris

Evergreen flowering shrub with white bells. It also attracts gardeners with its glossy leaves that can be creamy white, pink or red. The plant is resistant to diseases and pests, grows well in the sun or in the shade, tolerates any frost.

I told you what plants can be safely grown on the balcony in winter. You just have to choose the best option for yourself and arrange a real winter garden on the loggia or balcony.
