Is it worth replanting viburnum in the fall - my rules for choosing a seedling for reproduction, planting viburnum

  • Oct 20, 2021

Viburnum is an unpretentious shrub that feels great on almost any type of soil. The culture is popular for its bright, bitter fruits with valuable properties. When growing this plant, I adhere to certain rules for caring for it. One of the most important is the viburnum transplant.

Transplanting viburnum in the fall

I start this event in the fall, since most varieties of viburnum are frost-resistant and tolerate winter well. In spring, young plants planted in autumn take on growth faster.

I can highlight several advantages of this period:

  1. A young plant is placed in an already well-warmed soil. This has a beneficial effect on the development of the root system and its strengthening.
  2. The abundance of moisture contributes to the sedimentation of the soil, no voids are formed around the roots, which reliably protects the plant in winter. In addition, the soil saturated with moisture freezes longer.

  4. No need for additional watering.

The bush manages to adapt to a new place and take root before the onset of frost.

However, I have noticed some shortcomings:

  1. In severe frosts, a young plant may die.
  2. If the bushes are not properly protected, they become rodent bait.

Transplant rules

Viburnum is a vigorous plant. Transplanting an adult bush is quite problematic, so I recommend using the division method. It can be done both in summer and autumn.

I advise you to follow the recommendations:

  1. Choose healthy, strong shoots with a well-developed root system. Free from signs of disease and damage by pests.
  2. Choose a seedling with dense roots and 3 buds.
  3. Separate only with a sharp object (ax, knife or shovel).
  4. Sprinkle the cut area with crushed activated carbon.
  5. Place the separated shoot for 30-40 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection.
  6. Then for 30 minutes in a solution to stimulate root growth.

I make blanks 20 cm high. I try to take shoots that contain elastic branches and leaves. Before planting, I remove dead and dried parts of the roots and leaves.

Planting pit preparation

Viburnum is an unpretentious plant. However, it bears fruit best when planted in fertile soil with neutral acidity. I chose a place with good lighting, but protected from drafts and strong gusts of north and west winds, the occurrence of groundwater is at least 1.5 m.

If the soil is sandy, then the shrub will bear fruit worse. In this case, I recommend using organic fertilizers during the planting process: rotted manure, mature compost, and others.

Before landing, I prepared the site as follows:

  1. 21 days before placing the seedling, I dig a shovel onto the bayonet.
  2. I carefully remove weeds and other plant debris.
  3. I prepare the hole following the scheme: length - 60 cm; width - 55 cm; depth - 65 cm.
  4. I apply fertilizers: humus - 1 bucket; potassium sulfate - 0.5 kg; superphosphate - 100 g; dolomite flour - 1 glass. I thoroughly mix all the components with the soil and fill the hole by 2/3 of the volume.
  5. I spill it with soft, settled water - 35 liters.
  6. I place the seedling strictly vertically and gently spread the root system over the surface of the earth.
  7. I sprinkle it with earth and slightly compact it so that no voids form.
  8. I make sure that the root collar is 7 cm above ground level.
  9. I mulch the root circle with peat or sawdust.

I start transplanting the viburnum immediately, as soon as I collect the entire crop on the mother bush. So the young plant has time to adapt and develop the root system before the onset of frost.
