No cement needed: how to make a strong mortar for masonry and plaster with wood ash

Today, when there are no guarantees of the quality of the building material, more and more masters and owners are recalling the "experience of their ancestors." Masonry concrete is one of the oldest inventions of human civilization. However, for some reason, only a few people think about the fact that it is possible to prepare a solid solution for masonry and plaster, if desired, without using store ingredients at all. In any case, you can definitely refuse to purchase cement. Wood ash can perfectly replace it.

What is the strength of cement? The power is in oxides! Mineral binders, including those resistant to water, were discovered by people in antiquity. In different parts of the world and in different civilizations, a variety of minerals have been used as cement. Despite the apparent difference from each other, they all had something in common: they contained oxides of silicon, aluminum or iron. When interacting with water and lime, crystallization of calcium oxides occurred, as a result of which the well-known concrete was obtained.

Wood ash is one of those ancient cementitious ingredients. For the creation of cement and the production of concrete, it has been used since the days of ancient Rome. The power of ash is that it contains three "binding" oxides at once: calcium oxide, phosphorus oxide and potassium oxide. The ratio of substances can vary greatly depending on the type of wood that has been turned into ash. However, as a rule, potassium and calcium predominate.

In general, if you have a lot of free time, then you don't have to go to the hardware store at all! However, hardly anyone has the desire to crawl along the river banks with a basket in search of limestone. And hardly anyone in the country has a high-temperature furnace for roasting it and producing lime. Therefore, you will have to buy lime, so much so that 4-5 liters of slaked lime can be prepared from it. In addition, you will need ordinary table salt - 800-850 grams. Finally, ash is needed. A lot of ash - 6 liters of wood or coal.

Preparing the solution is not difficult. First, we take a sieve and sift all the ash from large debris over the bucket. It is advisable to do this several times. Then we do the same with salt over a separate container. Only then do we mix and thoroughly mix two dry elements in one container. After that, we take the prepared slaked lime and add it to the mixed ash and salt. We mix the mass for a long time and thoroughly until we get the porridge of the required consistency. Actually, the preparation of the solution is ready at this point. Further, it can be used both as a cement for masonry, and as a hydrophobic, heat-resistant finishing material, for example, to cover a furnace or stove.
