In autumn, some summer residents are interested in whether the open veranda needs to be protected from snow and rain. This must be done. In this article, I will discuss the advantages of "preserving" the veranda and how to do it.
Why close the veranda
If the veranda is open, conservation will avoid a large number of problems in the future. Rain and snow have a negative effect on the structure. It may seem insignificant, but one day it will make itself felt by rotten wood, mold and fungi. Preservation can significantly extend the operational life of the veranda. In addition, closing this area will prevent small branches, leaves and other debris from entering it.
Most often, the question of the need to close the veranda is considered even during the planning of the structure. But sometimes it happens that the owners of the site first think that they can do without it, and during operation it turns out that the veranda still needs to be closed from rain and snow.
In general, I recommend everyone to preserve their veranda for the winter. I will describe the methods below.
Glazing
Nowadays, the most popular are glass frameless fences. This design is easy enough to adapt to any type of terrace. At the same time, there are no profiles in it that interfere with the view, and the sun's rays can freely enter. Individual elements can be opened for ventilation. The disadvantage of using them is that frameless glass does not retain heat well.
Frame type glazing is more reliable in this regard. You can even make a greenhouse on the veranda. Frames made of plastic or metal make the room warmer and airtight. In general, the veranda becomes a full-fledged room in the house. But frames impair visibility, and dismantling them is more laborious.
Film
Personally, I use this particular material for the preservation of the veranda, as it is the most affordable. PVC film can be called a real salvation for the summer resident. It is inexpensive, even if new. And it is already used in almost any summer cottage. In addition, the film is lightweight, but at the same time quite strong, and during storage it does not take up much space.
Among the shortcomings, one can single out the fact that PVC film does not tolerate severe frosts well. Also, in strong winds, it can break. This material lasts approximately 2-3 winters.
Polycarbonate
Now cellular polycarbonate is used everywhere, although until recently this material was a curiosity. This is not surprising, since it has many advantages:
- resistance to strong winds and heavy rainfall;
- tolerates severe cold well;
- temperature drops are not terrible;
- wide range of colors.
That is why polycarbonate is used for the construction of sheds, greenhouses, gazebos, etc. It will perfectly protect the veranda from bad weather. A wide range will allow you to choose the most suitable option.
Among the disadvantages of this material are the following:
- high cost, especially when compared with film;
- not very convenient to use for temporary structures.
Polycarbonate is better suited for permanent structures. You will also have to find a suitable storage space for it.
Tarpaulin and construction awnings
Tarpaulin is a dense canvas that is impregnated with special chemical compounds to give strength. The composition depends on the purpose of the canvas. For household needs, tarpaulin is usually used, which has water-repellent and antifungal properties.
The main advantage of this material is its strength. It perfectly protects against bad weather and frost for many years.
Among the disadvantages is that the tarpaulin is much heavier than polycarbonate or film. This makes it difficult to secure it neatly.
Soft windows
Soft windows are inserts made from a strong and thin film. They are often used instead of conventional glazing. The film is simply stretched over the window frame.
If you do not want to make a closed veranda out of an open veranda, such films can be installed only for the cold season. You can also make a design that will allow you to raise and lower the canvas if necessary.
Soft windows are made specifically for these purposes, so they are more durable and frost-resistant than conventional PVC films. But the downside is that they are only made to order. In addition, the cost of soft windows is quite high.
Vertical awnings
If the appearance of the terrace is not very important, and the main task is to protect it from cold and rain, then a vertical awning can be used. In fact, these are large blackout curtains that wind up on a drum. Most often they are opaque, but have perforations. That is, they provide little lighting.
The vertical awning system can completely seal the terrace for the winter.
