It would seem that flowers need to be looked after very carefully. Nevertheless, there are also very resistant specimens, unpretentious to external conditions. In this article, I'm going to share with you information about what flowers need to be covered for the winter.

Everyone knows that annuals definitely need to be covered, but a problem arises with perennials - after all, they seem to be able to survive the cold season. But this only happens ideally. Many growers do not understand whether to shelter plants, as they want to grow not only flowers adapted to their region, but also other inhabitants of the flower beds. If you are going to do this, I recommend that you take care of protecting your flower bed for the winter.

Shelter of young flowers

I always cover flowers for the winter that are not yet a year old. After all, they are extremely fragile, and they also do not have a powerful rhizome. I cover, among other things, tree peonies, and starting from the first year of their life.

Perennials that need to be covered for the winter

I strongly recommend that you always cover heat-loving plants. In particular, I always cover tree peonies, hydrangeas, and also roses (it is not necessary to cover only parks, although a number of specialists think differently). In addition, it is imperative to cover clematis for the winter, which have bloomed on last year's shoots.

There are also perennials for which autumn mulching is enough. Among them are hosts, irises, astilba (its age should not exceed five years - older plants still have to be covered).

As for phlox, opinions differ here - some growers are convinced that they have enough compost, as well as humus; others believe that this plant needs spruce branches.

But daylilies, as well as bulbous ones, can successfully tolerate not too severe cold. In addition, periwinkle, loosestrife, saxifrage, bryozoan (that is, ground cover) tolerate the winter well. I do not advise covering herbaceous peonies if you live in the middle lane.

What is it worth to cover plants

My experience with shelter is quite controversial. I tried to use an industrial covering material: it turned out that it prevents freezing, but during thaws it can contribute to damping out. I also covered plants with foliage: a flower under such a shelter will "breathe", but rodents can make their way to it. You can cover the flowers with snow, but keep in mind that it will save the plants from the cold only if the cover is thick. So the final choice is determined by the weather conditions, as well as how far the site is from your home.

It is important to remember that it is not enough to cover the flowers - they also need to be prepared for winter. If necessary, I apply autumn fertilizing, water the plants, loosen, and also mulch. And, of course, you should cover the flowers in the right way.
