When the earring is in the right ear, it means he is the last man in his family (he had no sons, uncles, paternal nephews). When the earrings are in both the right and left ears, it means that he is the only child in the family.
Of course, if there was at least some opportunity, the commanders tried not to risk the lives of these Cossacks, to protect them. Firstly, it was humane, and secondly, after the death of the breadwinner, care for his parents fell on the shoulders of the community.
