It is better to plant garlic for the winter in sunny, elevated areas. Melted water floods the garlic in the spring and causes putrefaction. It often happens that beginners, even if they follow the rules, do not get the expected results. And all because the soil with a lack of lime is unsuitable for growing crops.
To determine acidity, you need to use a special device - an acid meter. An indentation is made in the ground to take a sample without debris, roots and stones. Next, you need to pour distilled water there. When the water is colored in the color of the soil, you need to lower the dipstick there for a minute. Further, the current level of acidity of the earth will appear on the screen. Its normal acid-base balance is considered to be in the range from 3.5 to 5.5 units.
Dates for planting garlic
If you plan to plant a plant 3-5 cm, then you need to sow three weeks before the first frost. In the central part of the country, this period begins around the end of September, and in the southern regions - about a month later.
Garlic, which is planted to a depth of 12-15 cm, takes root better and tolerates cold more easily. In medium-sized Russian regions, it can be planted at the end of August, and in the south - a month later.
Processing nuances
Before planting garlic for the winter, the soil should be prepared. From about mid-August to mid-September, you need to fertilize the soil. For every one square meter of a bed, a solution should be applied from:
- Humus 10 kg.
- Wood ash two large spoons.
- Chalk 1 large spoon.
- Sodium sulfate two large spoons.
- Superphosphate, one large spoon.
The composition should be evenly distributed over the site, then the soil is dug up.
The best bed size is considered to be up to 1 meter wide. The site should rise 20-25 cm from the level of the site. A lot of moisture should not enter the roots.
Features of disinfection
The soil must be treated with a 1% solution of copper sulfate. They take one tablespoon of this substance and dilute it in a bucket of water, after which the beds are watered. Half a bucket is enough for one square meter. The soil can then be covered with foil.
A few days before planting the garlic in the garden, you need to put urea at the rate of 15-20 g per square meter of the plot. After that, the earth must be shed with clean water.
For the purpose of soil disinfection, Topsin-M and Fitosporin preparations are also used. They prevent the spread of the fungus.
There is "Ridomil Gold" and similar insecticides. They are used for various pests, but other drugs are also required.
You can also use a strong manganese solution before planting the garlic. Manganese should be gradually added to a bucket of water and mixed thoroughly.
You can also dilute Bordeaux mixture in a bucket of water. You need about five large spoons or 110 g of the composition. This amount is enough for two meters of square garlic beds.
You can also make a solution like this:
- Copper sulfate 10 g.
- Boric acid 10 g.
- Bucket of water 10 liters.
All this must be mixed and potassium permanganate added until the water turns light crimson.
