We all watched a film about d'Artagnan at least once and remember that there were both the king's guards and the musketeers. Both those and others existed in reality, like the main character himself. But if in the film the Musketeers were the coolest, then in reality everything was different. It was the cardinal's guards who were considered the best in military affairs.
1. How things were in reality
The Musketeers were actually brave and brave people, but the training, as well as the equipment, were much better among the guardsmen. Compared to our time, they were an elite special forces unit of that period.
Their appearance was preceded by the case when Cardinal Richelieu miraculously survived the conspiracy of the Marquis de Chalet. He wanted to overthrow the king, and the cardinal prevented him from doing so. This fact became the reason for removing Richelieu. As a result, after this feat, the king, wishing to thank the cardinal, presented him with fifty of his best musketeers. By "donated" is meant an order to go into service with Richelieu. To the nobles, namely, they were all the royal musketeers, the king could only give orders.
2. Interesting facts about the guards and musketeers
As it turned out, serving the cardinal in terms of money turned out to be much more profitable than serving the head of state. The guards were equipped by the cardinal with all the best at his expense, and he paid salaries several times higher than the king. But he also drilled his army more, teaching all the skill and military subtleties.
There were a total of 150 Musketeers. There were only fifty guards at the very beginning, then - 150, and after some time - 420. But the best remained exactly one and a half hundred guardsmen - mounted musketeers. All the rest are gendarmes and musketeers on foot.
In his army, the cardinal accepted the best of the nobles - brave, obliging, loyal. People with such qualities, but not belonging to the noble family, were also taken into the army. By the way, the king did not do this and only nobles served with him. Richelieu paid people very well, gave out the best equipment and weapons. The musketeers naturally envied the guardsmen.

Envy and became the cause of fights, disputes, duels between them. And if the king encouraged such behavior, then the cardinal punished his army. In order not to be left without work, the guardsmen tried to avoid clashes with the musketeers. Hence the legend of their cowardice. Immediately before his death, the cardinal handed over the guard to the king, as a result of which the guards again turned into musketeers.
It will be equally interesting and useful to find out why in the days of Suvorov and Napoleon the soldiers fought in lines and walked in full growth.
