Painting is one of the most popular wall decoration methods. If before the preference was given to wallpaper, today in the projects of designers painted walls are more common. However, the process of applying paint itself can be fraught with some difficulties.
What mistakes are easy to make if you paint the walls yourself, the designer said Gayane Hayrapetyan.
7. Do not sand the surface
The walls for painting must be prepared. First of all, it is necessary to grind all the irregularities and remove the dust with a brush - fine dust particles and hairs will be visible even after staining. This issue is especially acute with glossy paint. She only focuses on the shortcomings. It is worth getting rid of other defects, for example, from greasy stains - the paint will not hide them.
At the same time, the unevenness of the walls can become a highlight. For example, in Bali-style interiors, imperfectly aligned surfaces look appropriate and even authentic.
6. Do not apply primer
Primer is another important step in preparing walls for painting. The primer strengthens the substrate and improves the adhesion between the layers of facing materials, preventing paint peeling. It is better to apply the composition with a brush - this way it penetrates deeper and does not spray. Wait at least 12 hours after priming.
5. Do not paint
In order not to be disappointed in the chosen color, it is better to paint the walls before painting the walls. Even if the store manages to decide on the shade, on the walls it can "play" in a completely different way. The perception will be influenced by lighting, the side of the light that the windows in the room face.
The best option is to pick up a few of the shades you like and apply them on the wall next to each other. Some manufacturers offer to purchase paint samples, for example, Little Greene has 0.06 liter containers for sale. During the day, you need to observe the behavior of the color - to see how it looks in the morning, afternoon, evening, with the lights on and off.
4. Buy the wrong tool
For good staining, just a roller or just a brush will not be enough. The first is needed to cover a large surface area, and the second is for corners and hard-to-reach places.
It is better if there are two rollers: with a long nap - for the first layer, with a short one - for the second. So when re-painting the paint consumption will be less. As for the brush, it is worth choosing a product made from natural bristles, it does not leave lint on the surface.
3. Apply paint randomly
The paint application must be orderly. Painting vertically first, then horizontally or diagonally is a bad idea. Chaotic strokes can be seen, especially in areas where you have worked with a brush.
2. Do not take hiding power into account
When choosing a paint, it is important to consider its hiding power or hiding power. Unfortunately, the standards for determining this indicator differ depending on the country of origin. Sometimes these are classes, sometimes grams per m2.
As a rule, the more expensive the paint, the better its hiding power. This means fewer layers are needed. In addition, paint with good hiding power better hides the previous color of the walls, which is important when re-painting.
1. To paint the wet layer
Do not try to apply a new coat of paint if the previous one is still wet. The consequence of such a rash decision will be the sticking of old paint on the roller. As a result, sanding of the already dry surface and re-painting may be required.
