IL-496 aircraft: what is known about the future flagship of Russian aviation

The Russian Il-496 aircraft promises to become the new flagship of the Russian passenger aviation. Development of the wide-body aircraft began back in 2017. Until recently, almost nothing was known about the new product. It's time to get to know the domestic car better and find out what exactly it will be capable of.

The new aircraft Il-96-400M is called. Thus, the index in its expanded form indicates that the first wide-body Ilyushin is a deep modernization of the Soviet Il-96 aircraft, produced in 1988. To date, 496 remains a promising specimen. The plane has already made its first flight. It is planned to put the car into operation no later than 2023. It is expected that the domestic novelty will be able to compete with the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747.

For this, the Russian aircraft already has everything it needs. With dimensions of 63.9x60.1 meters, the Russian airliner can lift up to 58 tons of payload into the sky. The plane will accommodate 435 passengers. For comparison, the Soviet Il-96 could only carry 40 tons of payload and 300 passengers. The 496th will be operated by a crew of 3 people. However, in the future, the number of specialists may be reduced to 2. The cruising speed will not change and will be 870 km / h. The flight range at maximum load will reach 9 thousand km.

It is important to note that the Il-496 airliner may become the first production aircraft to receive the promising PD-35 engine. This two-circuit turbofan power plant is being actively developed today. The main feature of the PD-35 is the ability to develop ultra-high thrust from 33 to 40 tons during takeoff. The designers promise to release the engine into series production in 2025. Thus, the PD-35 will have to replace the Soviet PS-90A-1 engines in the Il-496. This will reduce the number of power units from 4 to 2, while maintaining the aircraft's speed and traction performance. It is also important that the transition of the Russian aircraft to new engines will make it one of the most economical in the world in terms of fuel consumption.
