I want to admit that the Japanese Senshui bow is one of my favorites. Delicate taste, unpretentiousness and aesthetic appearance - everything in this variety is pleasant for me personally. Lately, I have been planting it on my site every season. In this article I will take a closer look at my pet.
general description
The fruits of the Senshui onions are round-elongated, have a milky white pulp with a golden skin, rich aroma and bright taste without a pungent aftertaste. Feathers are dark green, large and hollow, can reach half a meter in height. It is perfect for any kind of cooking.
The variety is early, the greens are ready by mid-spring, and the roots by mid-summer. Onions are resistant to most common diseases, in particular powdery mildew. Keeping quality and long-term preservation.
With a competent landing, you can collect up to 4 kg from 1 sq. m.
Recommended for landing in mid and southern latitudes. Despite its resistance to short-term frosts and mild southern frosts, the Senshui can hardly tolerate the constant low temperature of the northern regions. For the same reason, it is not suitable for winter sowing in these regions.
Landing
Given the weather conditions in my region, I can easily plant Senshui before winter for a quick spring harvest.
Since this variety is biennial, I use the seeds to get the seed, from which I subsequently harvest.
Special preparation, in addition to visual inspection and screening of damaged onions, does not require seeding of this onion.
Two weeks before planting, I carry out the standard procedures for preparing the beds: I dig up the soil, apply a complex of fertilizers, loosen the soil and let it settle a little. The soil composition should be neutral and medium-light. Right before the landing, I sprinkle the ground with ash and form planting ridges.
It is important to be in time for sowing before the start of frost. In my case, this is the end of October - the beginning of November. Focus on the climatic conditions and weather forecast in your area. The farther north, the earlier the disembarkation will be.
Good predecessors are beets, cabbage, carrots, and greens. But potatoes, legumes and other bulbs in this regard are best avoided.
The landing pattern is also quite classic:
- finished grooves should not be deep (about 5 cm), spaced up to 25 cm;
- the sowing is buried in the ground a couple of centimeters when placed in the furrow;
- keep the distance between the onions at 15-20 cm;
- after planting, sprinkle the holes with a mixture of earth and humus;
- carry out mulching with sawdust or coniferous spruce branches.
The mulch layer is removed in early spring after the snow melts.
The place where the onion grows should be well lit, located on an elevation in order to avoid stagnant water.
The Senshui itself is not demanding; the standard measures of watering, feeding and weeding will be enough for him.
Watering is carried out as needed as the soil dries up. It starts around the end of May and ends a couple of weeks before the final harvest.
Loosening and weeding are carried out after watering on damp ground.
From feedings I use
- spring fertilization with urea (10 g per 1 sq. m) and wood ash;
- phosphorus nutrition (20 g per 1 sq. m) and potassium (10 g per 1 sq. m) one month after germination.
For the prevention of diseases and pests, I use folk remedies: infusion of red pepper and tobacco dust.
Harvesting begins in mid-summer after the feathers begin to actively turn yellow at the tips. The harvested roots are kept in open sunlight for a week for drying and disinfection, and then removed under a canopy for another 3 weeks. After that, you should select undamaged fruits and remove them for long-term storage. In my cellar, I kept the harvest unchanged for six months. Damaged fruits can be used to prepare canned snacks or simply use in the preparation of various dishes.
