You can often hear such advice that before screwing self-tapping screws into a tree, they need to be lubricated with soap so that they fit better. But in reality, such advice is unlikely to help, and even worse, on the contrary. turns out to be harmful.
Some time ago, I seriously thought about this issue, since I needed to install a new OSB floor. Poorly entering screws could ruin everything and would have to redo the work.
You can face such problems if you do not process the screws before screwing in:
- 1. A few years after replacing the floor, it starts to squeak heavily.
- 2. Due to corrosion, self-tapping screws do not unscrew over time.
The lubrication material for self-tapping screws depends on the current needs. There are a few tips in total.
Tip 1
If you are going to work with wood, then in no case should you use oil or soap. For the absence of a squeak in the floor, it is enough to use Litol. It is a specialty lubricant that is ideal for this application. A tube can be bought at almost any hardware store for 100 rubles. Litol will save you from squeaks in the future, and the screws can be easily unscrewed if necessary.
You can also use graphite grease. Their principle of operation is almost the same as the price.
Tip 2
If the screws are to be screwed in forever, then there are several ways to strengthen them:
- Before tightening it yourself, you need to drill a hole that is slightly smaller in diameter than the self-tapping screw. Next, you need to drop a little moisture-resistant PVA glue there and screw in a self-tapping screw. It is almost impossible to get it later.
- For a "dead grip" you can use epoxy glue instead of PVA. But this method is only suitable if the amount of work is small. If there are too many screws, then it is more logical and cheaper to buy PVA glue.
