When growing cherries in Siberia, many different factors must be taken into account. After all, there are special climatic conditions that do not quite meet the requirements of this culture. In this article, I will show you how to grow cherries in cold climates. I must say right away that the most important thing in this matter is to choose the right type of tree.

Description of cherries

A feature of sweet cherry is its rapid growth. The crown of the tree is conical or ovoid. With age, the bark becomes a deep brown or red color. In young seedlings, the roots grow vertically, in mature trees - horizontally. Cherry begins to bloom before the leaves bloom. Her flowers are white, gathered in umbrellas. In order for the trees to produce a good harvest, I recommend planting at least 4 cherries in the garden.

The yield of a tree directly depends on the selected variety, the correct planting of the seedling and proper care. I recommend:

  • choose seedlings only in proven garden stores and nurseries with an impeccable reputation;
  • give preference to varieties that can withstand low temperatures;
  • buy seedlings that are 2-3 years old;
  • pay attention to a well-developed root system when purchasing.

As for the very process of planting cherries, I:

  1. I choose a well-lit area. In this case, it is important to take into account the depth of the groundwater. It is advisable that tall trees do not grow nearby, which will block the sun's rays for a young seedling.
  2. I prepare the landing pit in the fall. I immediately add organic fertilizers to it. I also add nitrogen and other mineral supplements. In the spring, in the center of the hole, I drive in a peg, to which the tree trunk will be tied in the future.
  3. Then I install the seedling, level it and cover it with soil.
  4. After that, the tree is watered and carefully compacted. The trunk circle is mulched.

Cherry varieties, which are ideal for growing in Siberia, do not need a lot of moisture. It is important to water them well in early summer, in the middle and after the foliage has fallen. Each time after watering, the trunk circle is loosened and mulched. But if the summer is too dry, I recommend watering the trees more often.

As for fertilization, I apply the first fertilizing a few years after planting the tree. I recommend using nitrogen fertilizers first and then organic fertilizers.

When growing cherries in Siberia, I pay special attention to the formation of the crown. With a crown in the form of a bush, the tree tolerates winter frosts more easily.

The best winter-hardy varieties of cherries

To get a rich harvest, I recommend that residents of the northern regions pay attention to such winter-hardy cherry varieties:

  • Pink pearls;
  • Cheremosh;
  • Iput.

These varieties are resistant to high frosts, bountiful harvest, disease and pest resistance.

Summing up, I want to note that if you follow these simple rules, you will be able to grow a large harvest of sweet cherries on your personal plot even in the harsh conditions of Siberia and the Urals.
