During factory tests, the submarine "Prince Vladimir" received the index designation K-549. NATO assigned the submarine to the Borei class, effectively duplicating the Russian designation of the Borei-A submarine project 955A, which belongs to the fourth generation of submarine military vessels. It is noteworthy that at first they wanted to name the K-549 "St. Nicholas" in honor of the Byzantine Archbishop Nicholas the Wonderworker. However, later it was decided to name the ship in honor of the ancient Russian Grand Duke of Kiev Vladimir Svyatoslavovich, the baptist of Russia.

First of all, this is torpedo-mine armament - 6 launchers of 533 mm caliber, which allow launching torpedoes, mines, missiles (including cruise missiles). R-30 Bulava solid-propellant ballistic missiles are in second position in the list of weapons. "Prince Vladimir" carries 16 of these missiles.
