Why do they buy up broken gearboxes at metal collectors? They are inexpensive, but what is made of them is very much appreciated

Greetings, friends!

I continue to delve into the art of working with metal and, literally three days ago, I bought two broken gearboxes. The first is from a SСANIA truck, and the second is from some kind of passenger car.

For 25 kg of junk I paid only 700 rubles. After disassembling them, he threw all the parts into the oven to get rid of the grease. Calcine on coals until red:

After a couple of hours, when everything cools down, I put the parts in acid to remove corrosion and clean the parts to their real steel shine:

I washed all the elements from acid under warm water, dried them with a building hair dryer, and now the preparation of the steel is finished, you can start implementing the idea.

Of course, not without drawings, I had to throw in a couple of sketches. But, this is a topic for another article, but now I chose the gears that were suitable for the size and got to work ...

From a large retaining ring, I made two arcs and due to them, using welding, I grabbed a steel sleeve in the center. After that, I cleaned the part:

I did the same with the bike chain and rear wheel sprocket.

The details had to be polished a little more and applied a protective coating - varnish. I left it to dry for a day ...

The last thing left is to fix the clockwork and set the hands, to help - a glue gun ...

Ready! This steampunk wall clock will delight any workshop, garage or service station owner.

Friends, these are several pieces of gears and a couple of days of work in total (including cleaning from rust and drying varnish).

Material cost:

I am not talking about the tool and personally spent time, but the cost of the material is as follows:

  • Silent clockwork - 370 rubles.
  • Arrows - 80 rubles.
  • Metal (2.4 kg) - 100 rubles
  • Varnish, acid - 50 rubles.

TOTAL: 600 rubles.

The cost of the finished product is 2000 rubles minimum, depending on the author's greed! By adding a few more gears to the watch and adding volume, you can ask for even more. The purchase of two checkpoints pays off from the first product, so there is still material left for 30 (figuratively) such hours.

But this is not limited to hours, take, for example, various lamps:

... I continue to develop my skills, I really liked working with metal!

Thanks!
