Rowan is an unusual garden plant. Nevertheless, at my summer cottage, I planted such a tree of the Nevezhinskaya variety and did not regret it. I want to tell you about it in more detail.
Description of the variety
This unpretentious plant reaches a height of up to 10 m. The shape of the crown directly depends on the quality of lighting. Since I planted rowan in a sunny place, the crown turned out to be spherical. Fruits appear not only on lateral shoots, but also in depth.
If the shadow prevails on the site, then it will be pyramidal.
The tree is branched, densely leafy. The color of the leaves is deep green. The bark is dark brown.
I noted that the flowers of Nevezhinskaya are nondescript, white, collected in small inflorescences, reaching a diameter of 10 cm. They appear already in May.
This mountain ash bears fruit abundantly. The berries ripen large, larger than those of a wild plant, bright red. I recommend harvesting in September-October.
The berries are juicy, tart, sweet and sour. They are high in vitamins and minerals.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
I have planted my mountain ash for a long time and during the cultivation I have highlighted the following advantages:
- Unpretentiousness. It grows well and bears fruit actively, even on poor soil.
- High resistance to frost. The tree is able to withstand frosts down to -50 ° C. Roots - freezing to a depth of 40 cm. Return frosts do not affect either flowering or yield. Nevezhinskaya is able to grow and bear fruit even in northern latitudes.
- High decorative qualities. During the flowering period, the crown is strewn with white inflorescences, and their rich aroma attracts pollinating insects.
- Rowan is fast-growing. I harvested the first crop already in the 4th year after planting. The plant gives a high yield every year, and from my mountain ash I collect up to 40 kg of delicious, juicy berries.
But there are also minor disadvantages:
- In shaded areas, growth slows down, yields decrease.
- Self-infertility. To harvest, I recommend planting another tree nearby. I have this grade Yellow. Red and Kubovaya are also suitable.
The rest of the plant is unpretentious.
Landing rules
I planted my mountain ash on the north side of the site. Since the tree is tall and spreading, it shelters other plants from strong gusts of cold wind.
Nevezhinskaya is unpretentious to the composition of the soil, but demanding of lighting. That is why I found a sunny place for her.
I advise planting to be carried out in the fall after leaf fall or in the spring before the buds swell. So the plant will take root faster and start growing.
I prepared a pit for planting in the fall according to the following scheme:
- diameter - 1 m;
- depth - 70 cm.
I drained the bottom with expanded clay, then made a soil mixture:
- superphosphate - 500 g;
- potassium salt - 100 g;
- humus - 10 kg.
He buried the root collar by 5 cm, sprinkled it with earth, then watered the seedling abundantly and mulched the tree trunk circle with peat.
Care
Mountain ash does not require special care, so I have reduced all agrotechnical techniques to the following:
- watering;
- loosening and weeding;
- fertilization;
- periodic pruning.
I water abundantly at the beginning of the growing season. Then I add moisture every 10 days along the perimeter of the root circle.
Then I proceed to loosening the soil and weeding. I mulch on top with a layer of peat so that fewer weeds grow.
I periodically apply organic and mineral fertilizers.
So, Nevezhinskaya mountain ash is great for growing in any region. With the observance of the minimum agricultural technology, it gives a high yield with excellent taste. I use berries mainly for making jams and pies, I use them fresh.
