Growing garden plants, especially roses, requires careful maintenance. The specific climatic conditions often interfere with the natural breeding process. For many gardeners, it becomes necessary to cover roses for the winter.

Preparing the plant for the onset of cold weather
Beginning in mid-August, you must stop cutting the buds. This will prevent the emergence of new shoots that are unable to fade before the onset of cold weather. Freezing contributes to the death of healthy branches. Cut off the stems just before the shelter, leaving 10 cm in length.
Treat the remains of the bushes with a special solution that prevents the appearance of pests.
Eliminate plant nutrition. Previous processing is sufficient to preserve nutrients.
Pluck off all the leaves (starting from the bottom of the plant). Gardeners recommend burning them to prevent the entry of pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
Do not close the plant before the onset of cold weather. The greenhouse effect negatively affects the root system.
The need to shelter roses for the winter
Garden flowers are considered unpretentious. Given the growing conditions, they are most resistant to temperature fluctuations. This statement is partly believed to be true, but applies only to some plant species. It is required to clarify frost resistance before purchasing a variety.
Gardeners recommend covering plants regardless of characteristics.
You can cover roses in winter in any way possible. The creation of protective elements is a simple process. The finished "cocoon" must meet the following characteristics:
- Strength. Resisting winds, snow, rainfall is a serious test for the frame.
- Air permeability. The covering material must breathe in order to avoid the decay of the root system.
- Reusable. Using durable materials, the "greenhouse" can be used for several seasons.
Shelter of standard roses is performed as follows. The winter preparation process for this type of flowers is more complicated. The inability to cut off the stem leads to additional manipulations:
- carefully dig in the plant, preserving the integrity of the root system;
- lay on one side, pressing in arcs;
- cover with plant material on top - dry leaves, branches;
- prepare a spunbond (any breathable cover medium);
- cover the whole plant, if you wish, you can cover the frame itself;
- strengthen the resulting structure; bricks and stones are suitable as an improvised material.
It is not recommended to use hay and sawdust as insulating plant material. During the period of heavy rains, they get wet (which contributes to the appearance of mice), with the onset of cold weather they freeze.
Regardless of the height of the plant, most gardeners prefer to create shelters based on metal or wooden arches. Arc frames have a number of advantages:
- High strength. Resistant to changeable weather conditions.
- Availability. Does not require material costs, it is often made from scrap materials.
- Reusable. It will retain its functions for several seasons.
- Protection against crushing snow.
The method of using film is not relevant, but is often used by the older generation. The advantage is the cheapest way. Disadvantages:
- Lack of strength. Material is susceptible to damage regardless of its density.
- Airing. The need to often come to the territory to open the greenhouse. Neglecting this point will lead to rotting of the plant.
- When using on arcs, it is necessary to leave a gap like a tunnel.
Regardless of the chosen method of covering roses in winter, it is not recommended to use fertilizers such as peat and manure. With all the favorable influence on the process of growing crops during the wintering period, they give the opposite effect.
Do not forget about airing in sealed "cocoons" and the reliability of the installed structure. The performed manipulations in the fall will please with their results at the beginning of the season.
