I would like to introduce you to a wonderful variety of black currant with a funny name Lazy. The name justifies itself, because the variety is really unpretentious and has an enviable resistance to most common diseases.
General description of the variety
The bummer is represented by vigorous bushes, capable of stretching in height above one and a half meters. Straight strong shoots are covered with large saturated green leaves, against which rather large black berries with a slight brownish tint ripen. The berries receive high palatability ratings due to their sweet dessert flavor with a slight refreshing sourness. In addition, juicy berries have a pronounced pleasant aroma.
Among the main positive features of the variety, I would note:
- excellent resistance to cold: currant bushes are able to survive temperatures below 30 degrees with a minus sign;
- the variety bears fruit abundantly with universal berries, which allow you to use them both fresh and for preparing winter snacks;
- A bummer has good natural immunity and is rarely affected by diseases, which clearly makes it easier to care for the plant.
Like any other variety, the Lazy One is not devoid of some drawbacks:
- berries ripen at different times and are very heterogeneous in appearance;
- you need to have time to harvest in time, otherwise ripe berries will simply crumble to the ground.
The nuances of landing a Bummer
In order for the bushes to develop correctly and bear fruit well, it is worth adhering to a number of rules:
- Choose the right landing dates. I planted bushes towards the end of October. So the root system of the plant managed to take root and safely endure wintering, and with the arrival of heat, the bushes began to grow actively.
- The more sun, the tastier the berries, therefore it is worth planting the variety in well-lit areas. It is advisable that the plants are protected from winds and drafts.
- Observe the rules of crop rotation and do not plant young plants in the place of old berry bushes. It is better to choose places where legumes were previously grown.
- The soil should be weakly acidic and have good air and water permeability. The variety does not tolerate flooding and stagnant water, so it is important to take care of drainage.
- The site for planting should be prepared in advance. To do this, I carefully clean the selected area, a couple of weeks before planting, I feed the soil with organic matter. For these purposes, you can use rotted manure or compost. It is also advisable to add superphosphate.
- The planting hole should be twice as wide as the root system of the plant so that the bush does not grow in cramped conditions.
- To avoid thickening of the plantings, plants should be planted at a minimum interval of one meter.
Features of care for the Lazy
With competent agricultural technology, shrubs are able to live and bear fruit for up to twenty years. To do this, it is important to perform the following steps:
- Provide competent watering, because both a shortage of water and an excess of water are dangerous for plants. From spring to the middle of the summer season, it is enough to water the fruit bushes no more than three times a week. It takes me about one bucket of water for one bush.
- Pruning. This necessary event can be carried out both in the spring, while the buds have not yet blossomed, and in the fall - before the arrival of the first freezing temperatures. Personally, I prefer autumn pruning, as there is often not enough time in the spring, and in the fall, you still need to prepare the plants for wintering.
- Timely loosening and digging of the soil for good air exchange. However, this should be done very carefully, because the root system of the currant is located quite close to the surface. At the time of digging, you can apply the necessary fertilizers.
- Preventive treatments against diseases and pests.
- Competent feeding, starting from the third year of the shrub's life. In the spring, it is worth making a top dressing with a high nitrogen content. The best remedy in my opinion is a urea-based solution. In the fall, currants respond well to the introduction of superphosphate. I apply dressing at the rate of at least 70 grams of funds per square of plantings.
Even a novice gardener can handle the cultivation of a Lazy Man. With minimal labor costs, a wonderful fragrant harvest will delight the whole family.
