If you need to weld a vertical seam on thick metal, 4 mm thick or more, then below there will be simple recommendations for a strong, beautiful seam.
For this example, I took 2 plates with a thickness of 4 mm, grabbed them together with a small gap. I grabbed this structure in a vertical position to the welding table and made a seam by pull-off welding.
The seam is tight, flake to flake, visually such a seam will look beautiful. For clarity, I made an enlarged photo of the seam. For a better visual example, I additionally removed the seam against the background of the electrode rod. Now let's move on to the very technique of such welding.
We take electrodes with rutile coating - these are brands MR-3, ANO-21, OK-46 00. It is good to often weld with such electrodes with frequent separation and re-ignition.
We will weld on reverse polarity - we will connect the holder with the electrode to the positive terminal of the inverter, so it is better to melt the metal. The diameter is 3 mm, the welding current is set at 120 amperes.
We begin to warm up the edges, we are not in a hurry to tear it off right away, the metal is cold and it takes time to warm it up and melt well. We warm up the edges, but try not to lead the electrode far to the edges, focus on the middle of the electrode with coating relative to the edge of the edge.
When the weld pool has formed - a molten lake of metal. The main thing here is not to overexpose so that the metal does not float down and the burn-through does not start. At this moment, you need to tear off the electrode.
Now we have to reignite, and there will be a very important moment - when, at what moment to do it and the very place on the weld pool where we will direct the electrode. Look.
For an analogy, I'll take a disc from a grinder. After the electrode is torn off, the weld pool begins to cool down quickly and fade. Cooling occurs from the edges to the middle.
And as a small point of uncooled non-tarnished metal remains, at this moment we reignite, directing the end of the electrode to this point.
Now we quickly make another hardfacing and tear it off. And so, surfacing after surfacing, we raise the vertical seam.
We will weld a small seam in this way on the back of these 2 plates. We beat off the slag and see what happened. Welding in this way makes a tight, even seam. Let's enlarge it.
