What kind of floor coverings should not be installed in rooms in a single contour, without threshold seams?

  • Jan 03, 2022

Many craftsmen have made sure from their own experience that not all floor coverings can be laid in a single contour, and many continue to lay floors with the slogan "We did this at Uncle Vasya's place, it has been lying for 5 years!". In fact, there are no masters or masters of strife and you need to rely only on your own head, and today we will figure out what kind of floor coverings are possible and which cannot be laid in a single contour without threshold seams.

The main snag of a single circuit lies in the fact that each room has its own microclimate! In different parts of the same apartment, it differs greatly, and since the temperature and humidity are different, then the flooring will behave in different ways, and if it is laid in a single contour, then stresses will arise at the transition points - the floor in these places will diverge or swell.

And since it depends on the microclimate, then in a single contour it is possible to lay those floor coverings, the behavior of the material of which least of all depends on the environment. environment, that is why ceramic tiles and porcelain stoneware can be laid, starting from your corridor, through the entire staircase and ending with apartments neighbors. The neighbors will thank you :-)))

The tree will be more difficult ...

What kind of floor coverings should not be installed in rooms in a single contour, without threshold seams?

Such a floor will have to be split into cards, that is, each room has its own contour, shared with the adjacent threshold, which is most often done under the door leaf. Many craftsmen turn a blind eye to this, gluing the parquet board tightly to the base - this is exactly the case when the masters can say "Yes, we did this with Aunt Masha, 7 years old - the flight is normal!". In one apartment, everything will be fine, and in another, over time, the boards will begin to tear or they will become a "house", since no one has canceled the laws of physics.

And by the way, the amount of deformation does not depend at all on the direction of laying the boards, and as already written above, the deformation occurs exclusively from the difference in the microclimate of two different rooms.

Many are trying to compensate for the deformation by increasing the gaps from the walls (instead of 10 mm they make 15-20 mm), so that there is room for the material to expand, but do not forget that having made gaps from the walls, you need to make gaps around other obstacles, for example, columns or heating pipes coming out of the floor. For many, the mistake lies in the fact that the board or laminate is trying to neatly flush to the heating pipe, leaving no gap for expansion.

Laminates are unpredictable. Sellers often say that it is better to separate cheap laminate with contours, the expensive one can be laid in one and this is due to the density of the material. The expensive species have a higher class and higher density, and therefore the likelihood of bloating is less, while the cheap ones, on the contrary, are more vulnerable to a change in the microclimate, but I tend to practice more ...

Practice shows that even the most expensive laminate swells and the most budgetary option lies quietly for decades, therefore, with the laminate, my advice: lay everything in one contour, and as soon as you notice the initial stage of deformation, divide the contour by cutting the flooring along the door canvases. This is done very simply with a circular saw or jigsaw in 10-15 minutes.

Outcome

Thus, ceramic tiles and porcelain stoneware need not be divided into contours, nothing will happen to it. With the laminate, we also make a general outline and in which case, you can always correct the situation... But the floor, made of piece elements, which are made from a solid solid, must be separated by expansion joints. The same applies to parquet boards, even though they are multi-layered... There are cases when it is also "guided" by parquet.

I really hope that the article was useful to you! In general, you should always rely on common sense and understanding of physical processes, because they all underlie the deformation of materials!

Thanks!
