In the early 1980s, the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Central Committee of the CPSU ordered to create for the needs of the KGB, Of the Soviet Army and the Ministry of Internal Affairs a new super-powerful pistol capable of piercing all existing at that time body armor. All eminent Soviet designers were involved in the work on the project, but in the end the project of Ivan Moiseevich Podbyrin won. He created the newest powerful cartridge of 9.8x48 mm caliber, and also used in the design of the pistol gas-operated automatics according to the Horn scheme and the Kiraly semi-free breechblock. Both were done due to the fact that the Podbyrin pistol was too powerful, and it was impossible to put classical automation in it. They released a super-powerful Soviet pistol with a circulation of only 3 thousand copies. And all this is... fiction.

Such a description of the mysterious Soviet pistol appeared in the American Handgunner magazine in the 1988 issue. Among other things, the article mentioned that the Podbyrin Pistol can penetrate the armor of the M113 armored personnel carrier and the M48 tank from a distance of 50 meters. The rest of the article was about interviews with the real creators of the gun. As you might guess, the magazine article was nothing more than promotional material for the 1988 Hollywood movie Red Heat, starring James Belushi and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Recall that the latter played the role of the Soviet policeman Ivan Danko, sent to the United States for investigation.

What is “the most powerful Soviet pistol” in reality? In fact, this is nothing more than a props for filming. Podbyrin was assembled from two pistols at once. The director of the film, Walter Hill, wanted the stern Soviet policeman to be heroic with something "communist-brutal." The fantasies of the project manager were realized by the American gunsmith Tim Lafrance. The master called his creation "Hollywood Eagle", because the movie pistol was based on American-Israeli Desert Eagle 0.357 Mk I, to which several parts from the German Walther P38. And the most interesting thing is that the resulting pistol could still shoot (and did on the set!). The truth about the real fire quality of the weapon-designer is not known.
