To understand that the house is poorly insulated, it is not necessary to have special means, like a thermal imager. It turns out that nature itself shows heat leaks due to elementary physical phenomena.

Recently, readers of the channel, in the comments, scared me that when using a special vapor barrier film (isospan) to cover the room from the cold attic, my insulation will suffer and stop fulfilling its functions.

In order to check this statement, I climbed into the attic. And to my surprise, I found there a heater covered with frost and wormholes on the rafters.

As a result, the reason for this phenomenon was found out. It turns out that the vapor barrier film was not completely installed. And the place of the abutments is the wall - the ceiling was not sealed with tape. The next day after the problem was discovered, the vapor barrier task was solved.

Then I began to analyze the situation and came to the conclusion that I could have seen this heat leak earlier. Outwardly. Pay attention to the photo below:

This is an old country house. It is not heated, no one lives in it.

And pay attention to the roof of the heated house:

It is abundantly covered with hanging icicles, precisely in those places where there is abundant heat release from the attic. During the thaw, the snow melts the heat and it transforms into hanging icicles.

Tip of the day

If icicles form on the roof of a heated house at a negative air temperature, but they are not on unheated buildings. Then your house is not insulated enough or has heat leaks into a cold attic.
