Many hobby gardeners mistakenly believe that all decorative flowers need an abundance of light. But from my own experience, I can say that there are some representatives of the flora that are pleasing to the eye, growing in the shade. I will talk about them in my article.
Shade-loving decorative crops for the garden and flower garden
Most of the shade-loving plants are perennials. They love partial shading.
In the shade and partial shade, you can grow as ornamental shrubs, tall herbaceous plants, and some low garden flowers.
Shrubs and semi-shrubs
Among tall shade-loving plants, I want to note:
- Astilba. This shrub belongs to perennials, has lush panicle inflorescences. They are white, pinkish, lilac and even crimson. The height of the bush in my area reaches 2 m, and the inflorescences grow up to 60 cm in diameter. I am pleased with the long flowering of the bushes, lasting right up to July. In bright light, astilbe loses its decorative effect. She needs regular watering.
- Badan. It is a herbaceous shrub, perennial. This plant pleases the eye with its beauty from spring to late autumn. It is strewn with numerous inflorescences located on high peduncles. After flowering, badan does not lose its decorative effect. It is covered with large foliage, which turns red in autumn. He loves this plant and the sun, but there he needs abundant watering.
- Periwinkle. This creeping evergreen is a semi-shrub with shoots up to 40 cm in height. Flowers reach 5 cm in diameter. Periwinkle blooms in spring, from May to June. The color of the inflorescences is mostly blue. But there are also pink and even red specimens. It is better to plant periwinkle next to trees.
- Brunner. This plant, which looks like a small shrub, is unpretentious. There are many types of it. I am planting a large-leaved Brunner variety. The foliage is located on long petioles, sometimes has a variegated color. Small inflorescences are blue in color.
- Buzulnik. This perennial shrub grows up to 2 m in height. It blooms for a long time, from June to October. Inflorescences of different colors, like chamomile. This decorative culture loves moisture and shade.
- Loosestrife. This shrub, reaching 60 cm in height, is suitable for growing in the shade where there is a lot of moisture. It is in these conditions that it blooms well. Flowers are yellow, white, pinkish. They are small in size, collected in spike-shaped panicles. The plant blooms in June and July.
- Volzhanka. This large perennial shrub grows up to 1.5 m in height. It blooms in May and exudes a honey scent. Inflorescences are small (up to 3 mm), white or creamy. The flowers are on a long peduncle that continues the stem. Inflorescences are dense spike-shaped panicles. Volzhanka loves dampness and shady places. She is unpretentious in care. Water it only in severe drought.
- Hydrangea. The plant is tree-like, shrub. There are also varieties in the form of vines. I grow panicle hydrangea and large-leaved. On acidic soil, the plant feels great. It can grow in the sun, but I plant it in partial shade so that it does not lose its decorative effect.
- The center is splendid. This perennial plant, which looks like a powerful bush, reaches a height of 1 m. It is decorated with snow-white, pink and red inflorescences, similar to hearts. This ornamental shrub can grow both in the sun and in the shade. He is unpretentious, rarely gets sick.
- Mirabilis. I grow it as an annual. An adult shrub reaches 80 cm in height. Its stem is straight, branches densely. The flowers are funnel-shaped, pink, white, yellow and variegated. Mirabilis blooms for a long time, from July to frost. Loves fertile soil.
Low shade-loving flowers for the garden
There are lovers of shaded areas in the garden and among low flowers, whose "height" does not exceed 15-20 cm. Among such decorative cultures, I would single out:
- Aquilegia. It is advisable to plant this plant where there is partial shade. The sun's rays lead to its slow development and rapid flowering. Flowering occurs in late May and June. The size of the inflorescences depends on the type of flower. Sometimes they reach 7 cm. There are monochrome flowers, and there are also variegated colors.
- Galanthus. It is also called a snowdrop. This is the first spring flower to appear in March. The plant barely reaches 15 cm in height. Its flowers look like white bells. Galanthus loves partial shade, but moisture stagnation is harmful to it.
- Liverwort. It blooms early (in April), reaches a height of 10 cm. Inflorescences are small, up to 4.5 cm. There are ordinary and double flowers. They are blue-violet, white or pink in color. The liverwort blooms until May. The plant loves shade and high humidity.
- Primrose. It is a compact perennial whose height rarely exceeds 20 cm. Inflorescences appear in April, but there are varieties that bloom in June. Primrose thrives in the shade. She doesn't need any special care. It grows especially well on drained soil.
There are many ornamental plants for the garden and flower garden that love shady places. They will become a real decoration of those areas of your summer cottage where there is practically no sun during the day.
