It is difficult to find an area where garlic does not grow. It is not difficult to grow it, even a novice gardener can cope with this. The main thing is to follow all the rules of agricultural technology and find the right time for planting. For example, spring or spring garlic is prized for its high yield and long shelf life.
Landing dates
Sowing work can be carried out as soon as the soil temperature is stable at least 5 degrees. This is about mid-April - early May. The main thing is not to postpone planting until the last moment, since the growing season of spring garlic is 90-110 days. He needs to have time to gain strength for active growth.
Seed preparation
Almost all varieties of spring garlic do not produce arrows. Only cloves are used for its reproduction.
Advice. When purchasing planting material in a specialized store, you need to find out in advance whether the selected varieties are suitable for a given region.
Before landing, you need to carry out several manipulations:
- Select large heads and divide them into cloves.
- Choose the largest, healthiest and undamaged ones.
- Make sure that the rudiments of the roots around the bottom do not dry out.
- Wrap the selected material in a damp cloth and place in a refrigerator or any other cool place for a week.
- Immediately before planting, soak the cloves in warm water for 10-12 hours.
Advice. You can also treat the seed with a growth stimulant and disinfect it with a potassium permanganate solution.
Soil preparation
The place for garlic beds should be well lit by the sun, protected from wind and drafts, and preferably located on a hill so that moisture does not stagnate. The most suitable soil is light loam with neutral acidity.
You should not plant garlic the next year after tomatoes and potatoes, since these plants have common diseases and pests, and after onion crops this cannot be done for 3-4 years. Favorable predecessors: legumes, melons, cucumbers, cabbage, green manure.
The beds should be prepared in advance, preferably in the fall. In extreme cases, you can do this in the spring a month or at least 2 weeks before planting. The main thing is to have time to add organic and mineral fertilizers for digging. It is recommended to loosen the soil again the day before planting.
Sowing work
Spring garlic cloves must be planted with the bottom down, deepening it by no more than 4 centimeters. The soil must be well moistened. It is recommended to make the holes at a distance of about 6-10 centimeters from each other, and the rows - at least 20-25 centimeters.
What you don’t need to do:
- sprinkle the teeth with earth on top;
- press them into the soil;
- cover the landing.
The only thing that is needed for garlic beds is mulching. This will help retain moisture in the soil throughout the plant's development, as well as prevent weed growth and insulate the soil in case of frost. As mulch, you can use sawdust, wood shavings, compost, crushed peat, decomposed hay or straw. The layer thickness is 10 centimeters.
Care
Fertilizers and groundbait are applied twice during the growing season. For example, nitrophoska or nitroammophoska (50 grams per 10 liters of water). Top dressing is carried out with a difference of 2-3 weeks. During the formation of heads, phosphate fertilizers are suitable, as they accelerate their development. The consumption rate of all fertilizers is 3-4 liters per 1 square meter of soil.
Garlic needs good watering. This is very important for the normal growth and development of the root system. After planting, water the plants regularly for two months as the soil dries up. The lack of moisture also manifests itself in yellow and dried leaves.
Advice. Cold water cannot be used for irrigation, and the procedure itself should be carried out without an active sun.
Further, watering the garlic must be thoroughly reduced, and completely stopped a couple of weeks before harvesting so that the heads dry out. In addition, it is necessary to remove weeds, loosen the soil in the aisles and in the garden bed, and add mulch if necessary.
It is possible to process plantings from pests and diseases only in case of special need. Garlic produces phytoncides and itself copes with ailments. However, the plants still need to be monitored in order to take action in time, if necessary.
Spring garlic is usually harvested in late August - early September. If the weather is clear, dry and free from frost, then the harvesting period can be postponed a little - this way the garlic will turn out to be more tasty and will be stored longer.
After the heads have been carefully dug out, they must be left to dry on the ground for several hours, and then carefully transfer to a dry and well-ventilated place where it can be positioned for later storage.
It is very easy to grow spring garlic. The main thing is to follow all the advice and recommendations, and then the result of all the work will be a delicious harvest that will lie for several months and will not deteriorate.
