I bet that most of you grow cucumbers on your plots, because it is one of the most popular crops in our gardens. I think many of you have encountered the problem of lack of ovaries. Moreover, such a nuisance can happen both when growing in an open way, and in a greenhouse.
Therefore, in this article I want to analyze the main causes of the phenomenon, as well as the actions that are advisable to take in this case.
Why are ovaries formed weakly or not at all?
Unfortunately, this problem has quite a few reasons:
- Violation of the temperature regime. Sharp changes are especially negative. For example, when the temperature is quite acceptable during the day, and at night it drops to 10 degrees. The heat is also bad for the culture. If the temperature is kept at around 35 degrees for a long time, the ovaries will also grow with difficulty.
- Violation of the watering regime. Cucumbers love moist soil as well as air. Watering also needs to be done correctly: before flowering, it is recommended to use the sprinkling method, and then pour water directly under the plants.
- Thickening of landings and errors in forming. For healthy development, there should be a minimum distance of 20 centimeters between the bushes and at least half a meter between the rows.
- Lack of nutrients and nutrients, especially potassium and phosphorus.
- Weak pollination is one of the most often overlooked problems. To avoid it, carefully study the characteristics of the purchased variety.
- The negative effects of diseases and pests.
- Late planting and harvesting.
- Excessive acidity of the soil, which is often provoked by improper dressing.
If everything is in order with the above list, ovaries have appeared, but there is no growth, it is worth looking for the reason in the lack of sunlight.
Correcting the situation: what to do
Let's say we have identified the reason, now it's time to take action. Here are some tried and true ways to force ovary formation:
- Mulching the soil with natural material will help protect the culture from sudden temperature jumps. These can be fallen leaves, sawdust or needles.
- Use only warm water for irrigation.
- Cover greenhouse transoms at night.
- When cucumbers enter fruiting, cut back on nitrogen fertilization and focus on potassium and magnesium. Root top dressing with ash shows good results.
- Do not delay harvesting - pluck the fruits as they mature.
- Reduce watering slightly, but be careful not to dry out the soil.
- Plant varieties that are capable of self-pollination in greenhouses.
How to feed cucumbers
For the ovaries to actively form, cucumbers need a large amount of nutrients. Below I will give the effective formulations and feeding schemes that I use myself:
- With the onset of flowering, it is good to feed the culture with a urea solution. To prepare the working composition, we dilute 40 grams of the product in 10 liters of clean water. We carry out spraying on the leaves.
- During the fruiting period, I again use urea for foliar feeding, only in the amount of 30 grams.
- During the budding period, a special ready-made product "Agricola" for cucumbers works well. The composition is very simple to prepare: 2 tablespoons of the preparation for 10 liters of water.
Plants respond well to the alternation of mineral complexes and organic fertilizers. From organic matter, you can use mullein or bird droppings. Do not forget that such a fertilizer cannot be applied in its pure form, it must always be diluted in a ratio of 1:10 in the case of mullein and 1:20 in the case of chicken droppings. For one plant, it takes me up to half a liter of top dressing.
In addition to do-it-yourself compositions, you can find special tools on store shelves aimed directly at stimulating growth or forming ovaries.
