A simple way to make a fire-resistant mortar without the use of cement

New technologies are constantly being developed in all spheres of human activity, and the construction industry is no exception. Improving the quality of the material, simplifying the workflow and at the same time getting good cost savings is the primary task of specialists. This is precisely the reason why American engineers from Rice University were able to make a breakthrough in the manufacture of a heat-resistant mortar for plaster, which does not contain cement. And everything would be fine, but this “recipe” was used in Russia long before our time.

Ash, even coal, even wood, is in a number of solutions an excellent alternative to the well-known cement. If we take, for example, plaster, then the ash will provide the solution with hardness, heat resistance, make it refractory and environmentally friendly. On the wall, the solution will keep perfectly for many years.

One of the main elements that make up the ash is calcium oxide, which has high cementing characteristics. It improves the structure of the mortar, its elasticity, makes it fire resistant and also durable. Such a solution perfectly withstands even very high temperatures. In construction, the ash solution is used in the construction of saunas, fireplaces, baths, stoves. It can be used when laying tiles, in order to close up gaps and cracks that have appeared.

To prepare such a solution you will need:

  • ash (you can take both wood and coal) - 6 l;
  • slaked lime in liquid form - from 4 to 5 liters;
  • table salt - 800 gr.

First you need to dilute the slaked lime in the same way as in the case of whitewashing, for example, 2.3 kilograms of lime is taken for ten liters of water. Ideally, after that, strain it.

Then the ash is taken, sifted so that no large particles and debris remain in it. Prepared ash, along with salt, is poured into a container and mixed well. After that, lime is added there. Just pour it in very slowly. In this case, the solution is stirred all the time so that it is homogeneous in its finished form. In terms of its structure, the mortar will be similar to ordinary cement, but in terms of quality and characteristics it will turn out much better than Portland cement.
