ZIL 130: is it true that the legendary Soviet truck was “licked” from Western models

It is no secret that many residents of the former Soviet republics rush from one extreme to another. Some are proud of the achievements of their country. Others believe that whatever little they did was somehow stolen from the "civilized" world. Today we will try to figure out the fate of the famous Soviet truck ZIL-130.

"You say that like it's a bad thing"

That's why, when it comes to Peter I, who went to study in Europe and hire specialists there the construction of the fleet, this is perceived as stretching the native Fatherland by a shaggy beard to a new level. And when the Communist Party, back in the years of the Civil War, began to send the first specialists to study abroad and diplomats to buy technology, then this is inevitably perceived by individual citizens as a lack of any initiative and "selfhood".

The frame is the most important element of any truck. And in the ZIL-130, it was by no means something new. This frame was developed back in the 1950s for ZIS trucks. For example, the same 4-ton frame was ridden by the no less famous 150th, and then the 164th and its modification “A”, the old frame has not changed over the years. The filling of the car changed, but the frame remained the same.

Moreover, if we take up the comparison of the ZIL-130 frame with the frames of other trucks of that era, it turns out that there is little in common between them. The Soviet frame is primarily characterized by increased torsional rigidity. In other words, unlike most foreign analogues of that time, it was made, among other things, for long-term operation in off-road conditions.

The cab is hardly the defining element of a truck, even if it remains a very important part of the design. Nevertheless, it is important to understand the main thing here: absolutely all trucks are stylistically similar. Including because of the related stamping technology. If we compare the Dodge SZ-TA8, Ford GK4500, Chevrolet 5700, REO F22R-I and even some Opel Blitz, it turns out that the cabs of all these cars are very similar.

The engine in the ZIL-130 was of its own design. However, in fairness it should be noted that it really went back to the American Chrysler power unit. There is nothing surprising in this, because it was the United States that was at the forefront of the development of internal combustion engines in the first half of the 20th century. That is why the samples and experience of overseas specialists were actively studied in the USSR. At the same time, the unit of the 130th was redesigned so much that it is already quite difficult to recognize it as a distant American relative. For example, in the USSR, first of all, they increased the volume and efficiency of engines.
