Today I would like to share with you a few secrets related to growing tomato seedlings. Let's talk about picking. After all, the timely implementation of this procedure is the key to a rich harvest.
Deadlines
When growing seedlings of tomatoes, it is very important not to miss the timing of the picking. In my experience, I have found that the optimal time for its implementation is between 10 and 15 days after the emergence of sprouts.
Why is it necessary to carry out the procedure during this period? If you rush and make a pick too early, there is a high probability that some of the young fragile plants will die due to injury to the delicate root system. Moreover, if you tighten and plant the tomatoes too late, the root system will grow too much and intertwine. In the process of unraveling, the roots will inevitably be injured.
Rules for picking
Now I want to tell you how I spend picking tomatoes. I always stick to the following plan:
- A few hours before the procedure, I thoroughly water the plants. This allows you to soften the soil and make it easier to extract the roots from the soil.
- While the earth is getting wet, I am preparing containers for transplantation. I fill the cups with soil and make a depression in the center about 5 cm high. For this I use a regular pencil.
- I pour some water into the hole. I do not recommend spilling the soil too abundantly, because after drying, a crust will appear on the surface, making aeration difficult.
- To extract plants from an old container, I use a teaspoon. I carefully pull out the sprout along with a clod of earth and tear off 0.5 cm from the tip of the root.
- To prevent the spread of infections, I treat the roots of tomatoes with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. For 1 liter of water, add 1 g of potassium permanganate.
- I place the treated plant in the hole, I make sure that the root does not bend. I immerse the sprout in the ground to the cotyledon leaves, then I crush the soil around the stem.
- After completing the procedure, I send the plants for several days to a dark place for acclimatization. In no case do not put the seedlings in the sun, it can be dangerous.
Seedling aftercare
After acclimatization, I place the boxes with seedlings in a bright place and regularly ventilate the room.
Further care for tomatoes after picking is as simple as possible. In the period before planting plants in open ground or a greenhouse, I monitor soil moisture. It should be in a moist state, the earthen coma should not be allowed to dry out. However, you should not be zealous with watering either, in order to prevent waterlogging.
A week after picking, I spend the first feeding.
That's the whole secret of successful picking seedlings. The main thing is to complete the procedure on time, not to rush during the transplant and be as accurate as possible. And regular care after will help the plants get stronger.,
