All tomatoes are thermophilic plants. If the temperature drops to +5 degrees, then the plant may freeze. Mid-season varieties stop flowering if the temperature drops below +15 degrees.
The best conditions are temperatures from +15 °С. In this case, tomato seedlings quickly take root, and the root system becomes strong. Before planting in open ground, plants can be hardened off. They are left in boxes in the open air, first for several hours, and then for the whole night.
The best temperature conditions for seedlings
Each variety has its own minimum temperature. There are frost-resistant varieties of tomatoes that are not afraid of even the most severe frosts.
Tomato cold tolerance can increase:
- selection of seeds depending on the climate;
- strong and large root system;
- timely pest and disease control;
- compliance with the irrigation regime and hardening.
If frosts are expected, then do not be upset. You can put several dark barrels of water in the greenhouse. The water warms up well there, and at night it gives off heat to the outside.
To protect tomato seedlings, covering material is used in open areas. You can use polyethylene or agrofibre. If they promise a cold snap, then during the day you can leave shelter in the beds. When the sun appears, the film must be removed. But you still need to watch the weather.
Ground temperature
Tomatoes at low ground temperatures quickly become lethargic, the roots have a bluish color. Even with warming, a supercooled culture becomes more vulnerable to various diseases. The crown develops distortedly.
Seedlings should receive a list of nutrients from the ground. She needs moisture to grow. A supercooled culture can be reanimated, but the expected harvest will still not be.
Features of the growth and development of tomatoes
If the planting was carried out in a timely manner, and the soil warmed up well, then the seedlings will easily be accepted in a new place and grow. At three weeks, the culture already has a strong root system.
In order for a hybrid or variety of tomatoes to give the expected number of fruits, it is necessary to plant in the ground warmed up from +20 degrees. At night, the temperature should not fall below +16 degrees. For the rapid growth of a vegetable in a greenhouse, a stable temperature of +20 to +23 degrees is required.
If the soil is cold, then the plant does not absorb phosphorus and nitrogen in the right quantities. Culture growth slows down. Under adverse conditions, all plants can die. High temperatures are also dangerous. Due to direct sunlight, the leaves get burned, they dry out, and the buds begin to crumble. Ties are not formed.
Low-growing tomatoes can be transplanted if their age is up to 50 days. Ampel varieties can be transplanted up to 90 days.
