I do not recommend storing early ripe varieties in winter. Therefore, I plant them in small quantities, since they are only suitable for fresh consumption. Mid-season varieties are suitable for winter storage. They are also used for pickling. But late varieties are stored almost until spring. They are suitable for preparing winter preparations.

How to plant cabbage

If you plant cabbage immediately in open ground, you can do this only when the temperature of the air and the earth warms up to +10 degrees above zero. I always recommend purchasing seeds in trusted and well-established stores, since the quality of seedlings depends on them. Seeds must be prepared before purchase. They are filled with water, and those that emerge are thrown away, since they still will not germinate. Further, the seeds are soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate.

I'm preparing the beds. Cabbage loves fertile soil, so I have been fertilizing the ground since autumn. Seeds are sown at a distance of 15 cm from each other. Then weak sprouts just break through. I plant early varieties of cabbage at the end of April, medium ones at the end of May, late ones at the beginning of June.

Growing seedlings of white cabbage

I prefer to grow cabbage seedlings on my own, although you can always buy them ready-made. I prepare seeds in the same way as when planting in open ground. In order for seedlings to grow well, they need to provide sufficient lighting and fertilization. I fertilize seedlings with mullein solution. Although purchased ready-made formulations are also suitable for this. Seedlings are grown mainly on windowsills.

Planting seedlings in open ground

Cabbage seedlings are transplanted into open ground two months after germination. A place in the garden has been prepared for this since autumn. Before planting, the beds are loosened, cleared of weeds and leveled. Before transplanting seedlings, containers with it are watered abundantly so that it is easily removed from the ground. The holes for it are made a little larger than the root system. Cabbage deepens to the first leaves. I prefer to plant it in beds at a distance of 50 cm from each other.

cabbage care

Cabbage loves moisture. But it is not recommended to rehydrate it. Since from this her root system will begin to rot. I pay special attention to watering during the formation of heads. First, after transplanting into open ground, I water the seedlings twice a week. For each plant, I pour about 2 liters of water. Then watering is gradually reduced to 1 time per week.

After watering, be sure to loosen the soil so that oxygen enters the roots. Three weeks after planting cabbage in open ground, it must be spudded, the procedure is repeated after a week. Also, when growing cabbage, attention must be paid to the application of fertilizers. The first time I feed seedlings two weeks after planting in open ground, either organic or mineral fertilizers. The second time top dressing is applied after 10 days.

Diseases and pests of cabbage

Cabbage has many enemies:

  • cabbage leaf beetle;
  • cabbage fly;
  • wavy flea;
  • cabbage moth;
  • cabbage white;
  • aphid;
  • secretive proboscis;
  • bear;
  • slugs.

Of the diseases, rot is dangerous to her. So that the cabbage does not get sick, it must be properly planted, choosing a sunny place without drafts.

Harvesting

I harvest cabbage depending on its variety. You can determine whether vegetables are ripe or not by strong and dense heads of cabbage.

As you can see, growing white cabbage in the garden is not so difficult. The main thing is to choose high-quality seeds, choose a suitable place for it and provide competent care.
