I will tell you how to correctly determine the date of sowing cabbage seeds, on what it depends.
The influence of cabbage varieties on sowing dates
Sowing seeds for cabbage directly depends on its variety. I use a variety of species for planting - from simple white cabbage to kohlrabi. Each species has its own growing season:
- The shortest is in early white cabbage (70-110 days), broccoli (65-80) and kohlrabi (60-70).
- The longest is in Brussels (120-150), color (100-150), Savoy (108-142) and late head (more than 146 days).
Seedlings of each species will also differ in age at the time of planting:
- In kohlrabi and late cabbage - 30-35 days.
- The average head, Savoy and broccoli - 35-45 days.
- In color - 40-45.
- Brussels has 45-50 days.
- In early cabbage - 45-60 days.
I noticed that the age of the late type of cabbage can be half that of the early one.
From this it is clear that the timing of sowing each species differ from each other.
For an approximate calculation of the timing of sowing, I subtract the age of the seedlings of the selected species from the date of planting in the ground. I minus another 10 days, which will take the seeds to germinate.
I choose the time for planting when the soil has time to warm up. I live in the middle lane, for me it is usually mid-late May. Less often - the end of April.
The average air temperature should be set from +10 °C.
Calculation of dates according to the lunar calendar
To determine a more accurate date for planting seeds, I use the lunar calendar.
In nature, there are days when planting cabbage and other plants is strongly discouraged. You can be left without a crop.
These days fall on the periods of new moon and full moon. They are not suitable for sowing, transplanting and any actions with plants. It is generally accepted that at these intervals all life on earth freezes, preparing for the next life cycle.
In the lunar calendar, all unfavorable days are marked. It's very convenient for me to use it.
Landing dates according to folk signs
I also did not disregard folk omens. I carefully studied them and decided to share my knowledge with you.
Our ancestors correlated the timing of sowing with the flowering of wild herbs and trees.
It seems to me that this can be given a scientific explanation - wild plants adapt well to natural conditions. Unlike garden crops, they themselves “determine” the readiness of the soil for sowing.
Here are a few tricks that I use:
- White cabbage can be planted when the leaves on the birch grow to the size of a small coin.
- I plant early and cauliflower in open ground when daffodils bloom.
- Brussels sprouts are ready to be transplanted into the ground when the irises are in bloom.
According to the folk calendar, there are holidays that also determine the time of planting seeds or planting seedlings in the ground:
- Arina (Irina) - nursery - celebrate April 29 in a new style. On this day, our ancestors planted seeds in boxes or directly into the soil under the shelter.
- The second Irina-seedling (or Irina-kapustnitsa) falls on May 18. From the moment of the holiday, the time comes for planting cabbage seedlings in open ground.
- Martha the nursery is celebrated on May 16 according to the new calendar. The day is considered favorable for sowing and planting many vegetable crops. And, of course, cabbage.
Based on the signs of our ancestors, I try to avoid sowing on certain days of the week:
- Wednesday;
- Thursday;
- Friday.
I want to note that the timing for sowing will be different for each region. I advise you to consider them individually, depending on the place where you live.
I prefer to follow all the advice for choosing favorable planting days for cabbage seeds.
