Peppers and tomatoes are among the most popular crops found in every garden. Plants are heat-loving and require certain conditions for growing. I would like to share my many years of experience in this matter.
Planting material preparation
One of the important points, since the resistance of future seedlings to weather fluctuations and pest attacks depends on it. The procedure will help to get a high yield.
I propose to consider one of the most common ways:
- Sorting. To do this, I prepare a cool saline solution. I take 2 tbsp. l. salt and dissolved in warm water. Then I put the seeds in there. Only those that have sunk to the bottom are suitable for landing.
- Disinfection. Since some seeds, especially those taken from my own garden, may contain disease-causing bacteria on the surface, I proceed to the disinfection procedure. I place the planting material in gauze bags and lower them into the prepared solution of potassium permanganate. I soak for at least 30 minutes.
- Germination. Helps to get friendly shoots at an earlier date. I take warm water with a temperature of 50-60 ° C. I put the seeds there for 2 hours. I draw special attention to the fact that it is impossible to place planting material on the radiator, since the sprouts will dry out.
- Soaking in a growth stimulator. The drug is purchased in a specialized store or prepared independently. To do this, I recommend taking 1 tbsp for 1 liter of warm water. l. wood ash, a pinch of boric acid. Mix everything thoroughly. I leave the seeds in the solution for 12 hours.
- hardening. Significantly increases the immunity of seeds to weather fluctuations. To do this, I place the seeds in the refrigerator for a day.
Soil preparation for seedlings
I prepare the soil for growing seedlings in the fall. I collect in the garden and pickle in a strong solution of potassium permanganate.
Next, I do this:
- I add 1 part of peat;
- 1 glass of wood ash;
- 1.5 st. l. complex fertilizer.
I use the specified amount for 3 buckets of soil.
I mix the components thoroughly.
Sowing features
For growing seedlings, I use wooden boxes with drainage holes. At the bottom I fall asleep a small layer of drainage. Then soil.
I make small furrows 1.5 cm deep at a distance of 5 cm. Next, I do sowing. Lightly sprinkle with earth and spray with a spray bottle.
I close the landing with plastic wrap, this helps to create a greenhouse effect. I place in a warm place where the temperature is at least 24 ° C. I air and spray daily, maintaining the required level of humidity.
The first shoots of tomatoes appear after 4 days.
Pertsev - after 7 days.
I draw special attention to the fact that as soon as the first shoots appeared, the film must be removed.
Lighting Requirements
An important point, since the health of seedlings depends on the length of daylight hours. With an insufficient amount of light, the plants stretch out, become frail and lethargic, and begin to hurt.
I organized additional lighting with the help of diode phytolamps.
I also maintain a temperature of 16-18 ° C. I water the seedlings with soft, warm, well-settled water as the soil dries up.
10 days after germination, I apply complex fertilizers.
