Dill is an unpretentious plant that, under certain conditions, can be grown all year round. I would like to share my experience in this matter.
Features of planting dill on the balcony
I use dill as a spice in large quantities and prefer not to freeze the plant, but to use it fresh. So it maximizes its taste, complements a large number of dishes.
It is for this reason that I grow dill not only in the open field in summer, but also all year round, placing the planting on the balcony.
For the event you need to prepare:
- landing containers;
- soil mixture;
- seeds;
- place to grow.
Selection and preparation of planting material
For growing at home, subject to all the rules of agricultural technology, you can choose almost any variety.
However, I recommend paying particular attention to the following:
- Grenadier;
- Gribovsky;
- Further;
- Umbrella;
- Kibray.
They are characterized by unpretentious care, have fast germination and early ripening. I especially liked them for their high taste qualities.
Planting material is pre-prepared:
- I select only healthy seeds. To do this, I soak them in a concentrated saline solution for 20 minutes. I use only those that have settled to the bottom.
- Disinfection for 30 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate.
- I soak for 2 hours in chamomile infusion with the addition of a small amount of growth stimulant. The procedure helps to speed up the emergence of seedlings.
- I place the seeds on wet gauze, which I put on the battery. I keep it constantly moist. I leave for 7 days.
- As soon as sprouts appear, I remove the planting material in the refrigerator for 3 days. Thus, hardening occurs - a procedure that significantly increases the immunity of plants.
Only after such preparation do I sow in the ground.
How to choose the right container
I recommend taking a wide container with a depth of at least 15 cm. I have these plastic boxes that do not rot and do not heat up under the sun.
I made drainage holes in the containers to drain excess water. Then the containers were thoroughly washed with soap and dried.
Further, he held for 2 hours in a solution of potassium permanganate, disinfecting in this way.
Soil preparation
You can use soil from a specialized store, but I prefer to prepare the soil myself. To do this, I take a small amount of land from my site and bake it in the oven at a temperature of 50 ° C for at least 3 hours.
Next, add 1 part:
- black peat;
- humus;
- coarse sand.
Before planting, I make small grooves 1.5 cm deep. I place the seeds in them and lightly sprinkle with earth. Thoroughly moisturize with a spray bottle.
I choose a place on a bright windowsill, but where there is no direct sunlight. In winter and early spring, I additionally highlight with phytolamps.
Dill care at home
To get a high yield even at home, I adhere to certain rules for caring for the crop.
I water often. So that the soil does not dry out, but there is no stagnation of moisture at the roots. I recommend using only soft, warm and well-settled water.
After watering, I loosen so that a crust does not form on the surface of the earth.
2 weeks after germination, I feed with complex fertilizer.
So, growing dill on the windowsill is not difficult. It is enough to choose the right place and observe the conditions for growing.
