The beauty and unpretentiousness of irises makes them one of the favorites among many flower growers. The variety of color shades and powerful green foliage can harmoniously fit this plant into any flower garden and into every landscape design. But can irises really grow successfully and bloom luxuriantly in any corner of the garden, or does this culture still have some care preferences? About this in my new article.

Unpretentious or capricious?

In general, iris does not require much care. Once planted in compliance with all agricultural practices, the bulb will grow in one place for 5-6 years, without requiring a transplant. All you need is a little care and attention on your part, and then the iris will bloom for its entire growing season. In order to achieve healthy growth for this floristic variety, you need:

  • correct soil;
  • timely watering;
  • sunlight;
  • regular feeding;
  • pre-winter preparation.

Now about everything in order.

Ideal place to land

Irises love bright sunny areas or light partial shade. Do not plant a flower in the shade of buildings and tall trees, otherwise it will bloom poorly. Protect the flower garden from drafts, do not place it near the location of groundwater. A well-lit hillock is the best option for iris.

Soil: is there a difference?

There is a difference, and it is significant. In heavy, poorly drained lands, irises grow poorly, which is reflected in flowering. I consider sandy or loamy neutral soils, loose and drained, to be the best planting option. If there are no such plots in your garden, the situation can be corrected:

  • loosen heavy soils with river sand, peat or rotted humus;
  • too loose air soil can be reinforced with clay;
  • add dolomite flour, wood ash or limestone to acidified soil.

When and how to plant

I prefer to plant my irises in early spring in prepared soil. And I have been preparing the soil since autumn. But you can plant in the winter, then make a bed three weeks before the procedure. Planting irises is not tricky, but it still has some subtleties:

  1. Prepare the site in advance by carefully removing weeds, dig and drain the soil with small pebbles or brick chips.
  2. It is worth planting flowers in the days of May, when the threat of frost has passed.
  3. Inspect the roots and stem, if necessary, shorten them by a third of the length.
  4. The diseased part of the plant must be removed with a sharp instrument and the sections treated with a solution of potassium permanganate.
  5. Holes for seedlings require shallow (4-5 cm), but the distance between the flowers must be made decent - up to 1 m.
  6. Carefully pour the soil, then straighten the roots of the flower inside the hole, cover with fertile soil from above and press down.

Irises quickly take root and immediately grow.

Minimum care

After planting, the flower needs a minimum of your attention:

  • water the irises abundantly, but not often, so that the topsoil has time to dry by 2-3 cm;
  • top dressing must be done three times: in spring, in May, with complex mineral compounds, in summer during the flowering period with organic matter, and in autumn with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers;
  • on the eve of winter, cut the foliage to a stump height of 10-15 cm, then mulch with sawdust, peat or humus.

As you can see, there is nothing difficult in planting irises. Having chosen a bright, warm place, prepare a fertile soil composition in advance. Be careful with planting material. If you fulfill these conditions, then further flowering and appearance of the plant will depend on your attention and care. My irises bloom every year with bright colors.
