Rules for spring planting hydrangeas

So that young seedlings have enough time for full rooting, I spend spring planting in March. I work according to the following scheme:

  1. I choose a place. I prefer soil with high acidity and moderate moisture.
  2. I'm digging a landing hole. I think the ideal size is 30x30 cm.
  3. The introduction of nutrients. At the bottom of the hole I place complex fertilizers mixed with peat and soil.
  4. Planting a seedling. I put a young bush in a hole and fall asleep with soil. I do not deepen the root collar.
  5. Watering. Immediately after planting, I spend moderate watering and cover the soil with a layer of mulch.

  7. Pruning. To ensure the splendor of the bushes, I cut the seedlings into 3 buds.

If a group of hydrangeas is planted, then I keep a distance of 1 m between them.

Planting cuttings

Spring planting of hydrangea cuttings should be carried out in May. This is due to the fact that the upper part of the shoots by this time will be fully developed, as intensive growth is activated.

Cuttings, after the appearance of their roots, are grown in nutrient soil. For these purposes, you can build a small greenhouse, or you can dig into the ground and carefully wrap it with covering material.

layering

Propagation of hydrangeas by layering is carried out in March according to the following plan:

  1. Loosening and leveling the soil in the near-stem circle of the bush.
  2. Creation of grooves 1.5-2 cm deep.
  3. Placement in the prepared recesses of the lower branches of the hydrangea bush.
  4. Fixing them with special studs, powdering with soil.
  5. Hilling up young shoots. By the end of summer, shoots from layering should reach a height of 15 cm. After that, once every 7 days I spend hilling them until the mound reaches a height of 25 cm.
  6. Excavation of cuttings. Held in October. I separate only shoots that have reached 50 cm in height.
  7. I dig in young bushes for the winter, I cover them from frost.
  8. In March next year, I transplant to a permanent place.

Planting seeds

I plant seeds immediately in open ground in the second half of April. I choose a place in the area with diffused lighting to avoid sunburn on young shoots.

I dig up the selected area, remove all plants from it. When digging, I introduce a mixture of peat and humus into the soil. I level the ground with a garden rake.

I randomly scatter the seeds, sprinkle them on top with fine sand. I water with the help of a “sprinkler” to avoid driving the seeds into the ground. Watering should be moderate. A month later, the first sprouts appear.

Caring for hydrangeas planted in spring

Young plants require the following points of care:

Hydrangea care.

  1. Watering. Hydrangea loves water, but it is important to avoid fluid stagnation. The amount of moisture depends entirely on the air temperature. In the spring, I use about 1.5-2 buckets of water per bush every 7 days. In the summer, in the heat - 2-3 buckets, twice a week.
  2. Mulching. It is carried out in the spring, to avoid drying out of the soil. Any suitable material can be used as mulch. The height of the mulch is at least 10 cm, the distance from the shoots is at least 8 cm.
  3. Pruning. It is held in the fall, but if you don’t have time, then you can cut the bushes in March, before the start of the thaw. When cutting the plant, I leave 7-9 strong shoots, which I shorten by 3-5 buds from above.
  4. Top dressing. I fertilize three times a season. In the spring - during the period of active growth. In July - during the formation of buds. In August - to give strength before wintering.

Spring planting hydrangeas can be done in a variety of ways. Which one do you use the most? Do you carry out additional care for young plants or are you limited to the standard one? Write about your experience in the comments.
