Sowing green fertilizers in summer

As soon as the harvest of early and mid-season horticultural crops is harvested, you can start sowing green manure. For example, after early potatoes or early cabbage. You can also sow green manure in empty beds, where previously grown crops such as spinach, peas, lettuce.

Best suited for summer planting:

  • rye (from the cereal family);
  • mustard (cruciferous);
  • lupins (legumes);
  • phacelia;
  • Clover.

These plants form an abundant green mass and grow rapidly.

Green manure can be grown in the amount of 3-4 times per season.

Gardeners sow mustard quite thickly, seed material is poured directly from a handful. A dense dense planting retains nutrients in the soil during rainfall and prevents erosion. Mustard is cut before flowering, when the grass reaches a height of about 10-15 cm. Cut vegetation on heavy soil should be repaired with a shovel, and on light soil a chopper or flat cutter will come to the rescue.

Among gardeners, such green manure as phacelia is popular. After 40-45 days after sowing, the green foliage is mowed and used for mulching. When the plant begins to bloom, it is placed in the ground to a depth of about 5-10 cm. Seeds are sown in this place again. In the area where phacelia grew 2-3 times and was placed in the ground, fertility is restored. June-July is suitable for planting phacelia.

Phacelia is an excellent honey plant. Siderat can be planted near cucumbers, legumes and other plants that bloom in July-August.

I grow phacelia in a separate bed in order to subsequently collect the seeds myself. As soon as the plant fades, I mow and dry the shoots along with the seeds.

I start sowing rye in the last days of August. Before the formation of ears, when the rye has time to build up a green mass, I cut it in the place of the tillering node and put it in compost. The roots gradually rot, and the soil becomes light and breathable, in which case the earth does not need to be dug.

Oats are not able to tolerate prolonged drought. So it is not recommended to plant it in the hot season.

Lupine is well suited for planting on poor soil with high acidity. Seeds are sown in July, and after 45-50 days the grass is mowed and placed in the ground with a flat cutter or a garden shovel. The plant, when rotting, turns into an excellent green fertilizer.

In case of delay, if the lupine pods have time to ripen, put the cut green manure in the compost heap, because the old shoots rot in the ground for a long time.

Using green fertilizers during the summer period, gardeners will be able to improve the structure of the soil and increase its fertility.
