It is believed that dill can grow anytime and anywhere, despite the weather and care criteria. However, this is not entirely true, and the first thing that suffers from poor quality conditions is the appearance and juiciness of the shoots. The plant will not die, but will be lethargic, withered, will lose a lot in color, growth and aroma.
I will try to understand the most common causes of poor health dill.
Negative factors affecting the vegetation of greenery include:
- insufficient amount of nutrients in the soil;
- increased acidity of the soil;
- poor seed quality;
- errors in preparation for landing;
- incorrect actions when sowing seeds;
- dishonest care.
Let's take a closer look at some of these situations.
Unsuitable land
In good soil, dill appreciates sufficient organic matter content, good aeration, good drainage, and low acidity.
I note right away that the soil on the site should initially be neutral - if you remove excess acid with lime or ash, then the dill planted then in this place will become reddish.
lack of light
For dill greens, a 10-hour light day is vital. With a clear lack of lighting, the shoots will stretch out and almost do not form a green mass, the color of the plant will noticeably fade, and the branches will lose both aroma and taste. The dill bed should be located in an open, lit area, and when grown at home, pots of herbs should be placed on the windowsill and, if necessary, illuminated with a phyto-lamp.
Poor seed quality
Often, gardeners leave already growing dill for seeds. However, periodically all seed must be replaced in order to avoid degeneration of the culture and loss of basic qualities. New seeds can be purchased from the store or borrowed from other growers.
I also advise you to always check the proper conditions in which the material is stored in the winter. Bags of grains should be kept in a warm, dark and dry place.
In addition, always pay attention to the variety of dill. I will open an unobvious trick - the later dill umbrellas ripen, the longer this species can be sown.
Landing violations
The best rules for planting dill include the following:
- before sowing, the soil must be abundantly moistened;
- germinated seeds should be planted as carefully as possible - damaged sprouts will die;
- maximum planting depth - 2 cm;
- excessive thickening of plantings should be avoided, otherwise seedlings should be thinned out;
- to get the maximum yield, you should plant greens in several stages and alternate varieties.
Wrong watering
For comfortable growth of juicy and fragrant greens, irrigation of dill beds should be plentiful.
In normal weather, 3 procedures per week are required, in hot climates - every second day.
water should be sufficient, but overflow should be avoided. If the liquid stagnates, then harmful rot will quickly form.
The drier the earth, the less tasty greenery will be on the bush. The dill will give all its strength to the formation of seed shoots, the plant simply does not have enough strength to shoot.
For irrigation, only warm, settled water is used, cold liquid can provoke diseases.
For dill, it will be proportionate to install a drip installation.
These situations have a bad effect on the state of greenery, but the good news is that they are all solvable.
