Good day, dear readers! Many gardeners are concerned about the question: is it possible to grow cucumbers and tomatoes in the same greenhouse? The fact is that not all plot sizes allow you to install several greenhouses at once. The answer to the question of co-growing is yes, but subject to a number of conditions, which I will discuss in today's article.

Pros and cons of co-growing cucumbers and tomatoes

Before making a decision about co-growing, it is worth examining the needs of the crops.

Among the arguments in favor of joint cultivation, I would note only one point - saving free space.

But the list of "cons" includes a few more items:

  • Tomatoes need constant ventilation, and cucumbers suffer from this.
  • For normal growth, cucumbers need high humidity. Tomato ovaries are poorly formed under such conditions. In addition, high humidity is considered a factor that provokes late blight of tomatoes.

What conditions do cucumbers need?

To grow strong, healthy plants and get a rich harvest, you must follow the following rules:

  • Provide regular watering. Cucumbers do not tolerate dry soil. It is best to use the sprinkling method for irrigation. Up to 25 liters of water per day per square meter of plantings. From the moment the ovaries are formed, the intensity of watering must be increased.
  • Immediately after planting, cucumbers need nutritious top dressing up to two times a month. Both organics and mineral complexes are needed as fertilizers.
  • The length of daylight hours for cucumbers should be at least ten hours.
  • After sowing, cucumbers must be provided with a temperature regime in the range from 25 to 28 degrees. As the temperature rises, the temperature should be reduced to 17 degrees.
  • Humidity for proper development should be above 85%. Otherwise, pollination and the formation of ovaries will be sluggish.
  • Cucumbers do not tolerate drafts, especially when young plants are not yet strong.

Growing conditions for tomatoes

To grow a rich crop of juicy tomatoes, you will need to provide the following conditions:

  • Tomatoes need to be artificially assisted in pollination. The procedure should be performed only on warm days.
  • Systematically ventilate the space of the greenhouse, especially when the tomato bushes are in the flowering stage.
  • The temperature during the day should be in the range from 20 to 22 degrees, at night - from 16 to 18 degrees.
  • It is not desirable that the soil moisture exceed 80%. The air for the proper growth of tomatoes must be dry.
  • Water enough once a week, but plentifully. For one square of landings, at least 12 liters of water will be required. Watering is best done in the morning.

How to successfully grow tomatoes and cucumbers together?

As you can see, there are no common points in growing cucumbers and tomatoes. However, if there is no space for a second greenhouse on the site, vegetables can be grown in one. You only need to create certain conditions:

  • Perform zoning of the greenhouse space so that the cultures do not interfere with each other.
  • Choose varieties of tomatoes for planting that have good immunity to diseases of a fungal nature. Cucumbers should be selected resistant to drafts and low temperatures. Among the tomatoes, I would recommend choosing the Dubrava, Gnoi and Zhavoronok varieties. Among cucumbers that are resistant to drafts, you should pay attention to Masha, Murashka and Nightingale.
  • Cucumbers are best planted on the north side of the greenhouse.
  • Crops in the greenhouse can be divided by film partitions, and the soil can be divided using a slate sheet.

Having created certain conditions, it is quite possible to grow tomatoes and cucumbers together. Good luck to everyone and have a great harvest!
