We should start with the fact that any Hummer that we meet on the road is a “pathetic craft” regarding a real army SUV. By the way, the latter is not a Hammer at all, but a Humvee. The main SUV of the modern American army was born back in 1984 and is called HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle). However, since even an American marine will braid such an abbreviation into a sea knot, the mass of soldiers quickly nicknamed the all-wheel drive hard worker the nickname “Humvee” or “Humvee”.
The civilian version of the SUV, officially produced under the Hummer brand, was born only in 1992. Apparently, against the backdrop of an explosion of jingoistic patriotism in the United States after the 1991 Operation Desert Storm. Then the Pentagon and the US television people turned the war into a real show, making excellent PR for the American army. Humvee took a direct part in the Iraqi events. So unknowingly, a great advertising campaign came out. By the way, it was "Desert Storm", which in the end was ironically nicknamed "War on TV", in many ways rehabilitated the image of the US Army in the eyes of the American population after the social trauma caused by the war in Vietnam.
The history of the Humvee began back in 1979, when the Pentagon announced a competition to create a new army SUV. Then all the leading American automobile enterprises took part in the competition. However, in the end the winner was the manufacturer AM General, which was considered to offer the most rational design and price-performance ratio. The car really turned out to be solid and met all the requirements of the Pentagon. Including "Humvee" could be parachuted from the air.

At one time, the Humvee replaced the M151 SUVs, which were born in 1959. Used by HMMWV to this day. The main operators are the US Army and the Marine Corps (the army reports to the Senate, the Corps - directly to the US President).
