It can be scary for beginner gardeners to plant grapes on their site. It is believed that this culture needs careful care. Grapes can die from the slightest change in climate. But it's not. Today I’ll tell you how to increase plant immunity and what rules help grapes develop.
Why is it better to plant in the spring?
Spring planting of grapes is preferable. The seedling gains strength over the summer and independently prepares for wintering. If you plant a seedling or cutting in the fall, then there is a risk that the plant will not take root or will freeze out in winter.
There are no exact dates for landing, I recommend relying on weather conditions. The air temperature should be at least +15 degrees, and the earth should warm up to +10. It is better to choose a calm day, but a little cloudy. Some recommend relying on the lunar calendar. I believe that it is better to choose favorable days based on the weather forecast.
The only negative of spring planting is the presence of pests and parasites. In the spring, all insects are activated and can hit a young seedling. Therefore, regular processing is necessary. Before planting, I soak the cuttings themselves in a solution of growth stimulants. This allows the grapes to take root faster.
Soil preparation and planting site
It is necessary to choose the right place where the grapes will grow. It is necessary to choose a well-lit place in the south of the site. Grapes need a lot of sunlight. In the shade, the plant will develop slowly, often and for a long time get sick. In the Urals and Siberia, some gardeners use the following tricks: they install a wooden screen next to the future vine, which will help protect the plantings from the wind. The screen needs to be painted green. The tree will heat up from the sun and give off heat to the grapes. The soil between the bushes can be covered with a black film or stones can be placed nearby, which will also give off their heat to the ground when heated.
The soil should be nutritious, loose and fairly light. Sandy soil does not retain moisture well, it lacks the necessary nutrients. The soil should be neutral or slightly acidic. With increased acidity, it is better to cultivate the earth with lime or add chalk.
Landing site preparation
A pit for grapes should be prepared in the fall. I dig a hole about 90 cm deep. I lay drainage at the bottom, you can even use broken bricks. The fragments must be the same size. Layer about 10 cm. The smaller the better. On the drainage, I spread a nutrient mixture of dry ash and 800 grams of superphosphate. I fill the hole with earth and leave it until spring. I dig a hole in the spring.
You can try to prepare the soil in the spring. To do this, you need to dig a trench about 65 by 65 cm. a month, and preferably two before planting grapes. Drainage is also laid out at the bottom, compost or rotted manure is used as fertilizer.
Autumn soil preparation is preferable. The nutrient mixture will saturate the soil with the necessary substances.
Preparing a seedling or cutting
Grapes can be bought in the fall, then it will need to be stored at home in the cellar until spring. During this time, the plant may weaken. It must be soaked in a growth stimulator. Externally, the seedling should be smooth, clean, without cracks, growths. Roots should be at least 4, the more the better. The roots themselves should be even, white, elastic. If the root system is weak and dry, then such grapes will not take root in open ground.
The distance between the vines must be at least 2.5 meters. Otherwise, the bushes will obscure each other. Carrots, sorrel, peas, beans, strawberries, cucumbers will be excellent neighbors for grapes.
