Hostas are highly ornamental plants. They are a real decoration of a summer cottage and look harmonious not only in flower beds with other flowers, but also in a solo planting. I, too, could not pass by these beauties and successfully grow several hostas in my garden. I want to share the secrets of successful planting and growing crops.

Where is the best place to plant a hosta?

The plant is unpretentious and suitable for planting both in the bright rays of the sun, and in the shade or partial shade. If you want to keep the pattern on the leaves, then it is better to choose partial shade.

The beauty prefers fertile soil, rich in humus, slightly acidified, well conducting water and air. The site should be well hydrated, which is why I chose several plants to decorate the artificial pond.

Landing time

I planted my plants in the spring when the threat of a return frost had passed. Approximately from the end of April to the middle of May.

However, the site was prepared in the fall:

  1. I dug up a shovel on a bayonet.
  2. Introduced the required amount of nutrients.
  3. Leveled with a garden rake.

In the spring, a week before planting, I dug again. With this method, the plant has time to fully take root before the onset of frost and the next year pleases the eye with its active growth.

But some gardeners I know prefer to plant this plant in the fall. With this method, I recommend accurately calculating the time before the onset of frost - the end of August, the beginning of September.

Landing technology

I advise you to follow a certain procedure so that the plant takes root faster:

  1. Make planting holes for young plants 2 cm deeper than those in which they grew before.
  2. Drain the bottom with a small layer of expanded clay, crushed stone or pebbles.
  3. Gently distribute the root system over the surface.
  4. Sprinkle with a small layer of earth.
  5. Lightly compact so that no voids form.
  6. Pour water.

I mulch the root circle with one of the following materials:

  • sawdust;
  • straw;
  • shavings;
  • peat.

In group plantings, I planted young hosts at a distance of 35-40 cm from each other. Between sprawling varieties, I recommend observing 1 m.

Features of care

Despite the fact that hostas are unpretentious in cultivation, I advise you to follow certain care rules in order to get the maximum decorative qualities:

  • watering;
  • loosening;
  • fertilizer application;
  • mulching.

Irrigation scheme

Hostas prefer moist soil. Complete drying of the soil for them is unacceptable. Therefore, I bring water every 2-3 days. If the weather is dry, then every day in the morning and evening.

I use well-settled, soft and warm water so as not to provoke rotting and the appearance of fungal infections.

loosening

After watering, be sure to loosen the soil so that a crust does not form on top. I go as deep as 10 cm. At the same time, I carefully remove all weeds and plant debris.

Mulching

On dry days, I mulch to keep the soil moist as long as possible. I am using one of the following:

  • sawdust:
  • wood shavings;
  • bark;
  • straw.

Fertilization

If the plants begin to lose their decorative qualities, I apply complex fertilizers. I use complex formulations that contain:

  • nitrogen;
  • potassium;
  • phosphorus.

I scatter the granules around the perimeter of the root circle and water it.

In conclusion, I want to say that planting and growing a host is quite simple. You need to choose the right site and prepare it. With minimal care, the plant will please the eye.
